Just the other morning as I was looking through my little Birds of the Southwest book to identify all the birds at my feeder in Santa Fe I was thinking of the first time I ever got to go birding. It was the Fall of 1972 and The Bates' had just settled in Bloomington. My Dad told Rex how I'd scored a 100% on a bird call identification test in school and they invited me to go birdwatching with them. I'll never forget that morning, walking in the woods around Sunset Dr. with their sweet Corgi, who they loved so much, tagging along. I ID'd one bird as a Thrush and I remember Rex saying, "Why, by gosh, I think you're right" and then he and Reva gave me the binoculars that I had been using saying, "I think you deserve to have these." Rex and Reva were kind and gentle people who were good friends to our family, They made a lasting contribution to the culture of Bloomington/Normal and to one 11 year-old girls love of bird watching. My condolences to all their family.

Though I only knew Mr. Bates through his daughter and son-in-law, he was truly a great man with a generous heart and love for the community (The James Center/Sequim). Mr. Bates was likely one of the most honored and successful senior corporate executives to have called Sequim his retirement home. Rest in peace Mr. Bates and to Patsy, Dave and family - prayers and sympathy in your loss, he was a great man and father.

Jim was always so kind to me when he came to Downriggers. Him & Reva treated me so kindly. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. One of my favorite guests!
