Rhea Foulger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2025.
Rhea Jean Smurthwaite Foulger of Salt Lake City, Utah passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025 among her family. She was 93 years old.

Rhea was born on December 2, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Charles and Rhea Smurthwaite. She was the third of six children, and close with her siblings–Dorothy, CJ, Elaine, Michael and Diane. Her childhood summers were spent swimming and lifeguarding at Liberty Park, dancing at school, and spending time with friends and family.

After graduating from South High, Rhea attended the University of Utah where she pledged to the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and made many lasting friendships. Rhea met her sweetheart Donald Foulger at an intra-fraternity formal dance at the U, and they were married one year later on April 25, 1952. Their first year of marriage was spent in Virginia, while Donald was stationed at Fort Belvoir. They later returned to Salt Lake City to raise their four children.

Throughout their life, they enjoyed showing quarter horses, playing golf, socializing with dear friends, traveling extensively, and spending time at their cabin on Hebgen Lake in Montana. The cabin is a beloved place for all of the family, as well as many friends who have come to fish, waterski, and relax at the most beautiful place on earth. She specialized in keeping the cabin clean and organized, cooking gourmet meals, playing card games, and watching old movies.

Rhea had many hobbies, including playing and teaching Bridge. She loved playing cards and achieved the level of Life Master from the American Bridge League. She relished going to tournaments, earning points, and sharing the glory with her friends. Additionally, Rhea was a prolific knitter. She knit countless sweaters, hats, scarves, and dishcloths to give to friends and family. She also knit each family member a personalized Christmas stocking, and enjoyed filling them with gifts and treats on Christmas morning. In her last few years, going to Knitting Group was a highlight of her week.

Rhea is known for her gracious hospitality. She was a fabulous cook and enjoyed hosting friends and loved ones. Many will remember her popovers, turkey dinner with all the fixings, decadent cakes, and huevos rancheros. Nobody made popcorn quite like Rhea: air popped, lots of REAL butter, and plenty of salt! Her signature treat, however, was a scoop of plain vanilla ice cream–hot fudge optional.

Rhea is survived by her four children David, Tom, Alyson (Spence), and Paul, and was Grammy to thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren, with one on the way. We'll miss her blunt catchphrases, her refined sense of style, and her generous support.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Holladay City Hall in the Big Cottonwood Room (4580 S 2300 E) on May 29, 2025 from 6:30-8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Feeding America in Rhea's honor. https://teamfeed.feedingamerica.org/campaign/rhea-fougler

David, Tom, Ally, Paul, what a beautiful evening you held last night for Grammy! To listen to each of you tell your stories of your memories was so wonderful. Rhea was truly the lady we all will cherish forever. Many of us have so many wonderful memories of her and how much she gave to so many... she will live on through all of you and her beautiful knitting that I know many of us have and wear. Thank you to sharing the wall of fame with all of us! Cherish her memories as each of us will!
Lots of love to each of you,

Dear Dave, Tom, Paul, Allison & Spence

What a wonderful obituary you penned about Rhea. You captured her perfectly and we so loved the photos. You are a family we truly love and admire and have always enjoyed being around all of you.

Both Bob and & I have more wonderful, fun filled memories that we can possibly iterate here, but there are a few that stand out from the last 60 years when Bob first met Don at Holiday Investors. That was the beginning of a great friendship with both of your parents.

Here are some of our highlight memories:

The Plane: The exciting rides were special and took us to places like The Boulders in Colorado Springs for one of the Holiday Investors annual trips and Mexico with Don, Rhea, Jack, Lanny and the Richins

The Cabin: Who didn't love getting invited & going to the Cabin for Fishing, Trips into the Park, Bridge, Boat Rides, Rhea's famous "eggs golden rod" (which Bob still requests for Sunday breakfast). It is such a special place!

The Football Ace's: This was an annual fall football group got together weekly to bet on the season's games... that was a lot of fun for the guys and for the Super Bowl, the guys and dolls enjoyed the game at one of our homes for drinks, food and lots of betting on the game!

Interior Design Projects: Bob and I had the good fortune to help design and decorate Don's offices and a couple of their residences. And we enjoyed many dinners, bridge games etc. in their home.

This is just a few of a long list of life time memories and we look forward to seeing all of you on May 29th to honor Rhea and her family.

Love to all of you, Bob & Bette Richins

Aunt Rhea you will be missed by so many. You are an integral part of my childhood. I grew up with you and your family. Always there to help in ways nobody knows how to any more ... cook, iron (in fact I remember my mother Joyce had you teach me how to iron) and of course bridge ... a life master and also a master bridge teacher. I imagine there are hundreds of bridge players that you taught. My love and sincerest sympathies to David, Tommy, Alison, Paul and all her loved ones. The Rapp Family .... Karen and Denise. Rhea was my oldest living friend! I admired Dot, Lainey, and all the Smurthwaite family from childhood on up to the marriage of Rhea and Don. Then as married couples, we enjoyed the Hebgen cabin, golf games, and many bridge and other activities through the years.
She is missed by all! Thanks for the memories, Rhea Dear.

I loved my aunt Rhea, the obit was very accurate, she was the "happy glue" that kept everyone together and happy, that´s how I always remember her as a youngster. Thanksgivings and Christmas´ were epic with her leading the charge. Fantastic memories that I´ll always cherish. Unfortunately I saw her very little the last 40 years; as our extended family grew and matured into bigger numbers, we had less family group Holidays together. This now marks the end of a family who truly had Matriarch who was a true blessing! God Bless aunt Rhea and the Foulger family!!!!!!! johnny

My dearest Grammy, my million memories of you will forever remain something I shall cherish forever! My wonderful Santa sweater that I wear each and every year that you knit for me is one of my special treasures! You always made me feel special, no one could have imagined having such a beautiful Mother in law like you !!! I always tried to follow in your footsteps, too be as strong, loving, and giving as you were to so many! May you find peace and comfort now with Grandpa watching over your family and enjoying the beautiful sunsets of the Cabin together again! Shabbat my beloved lady!
