Rhonda Norris Blanchard, 50, passed away suddenly on Saturday evening, February 21, 2015. Born on July 29, 1964 in Raleigh; she was the daughter of Ed and Mary "Mimi" Norris, of Cary and wife of Joe Blanchard, of Cary.

Rhonda graduated from Cary High School in 1982, graduated from NC State University in 2010 and was working on her Master's Degree. She taught special needs children at Middle Creek High School and served as head coach for both men's and women's tennis. Rhonda began her career within the Wake County Public School System in 1992 and had also worked with the Town of Cary for 17 years. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 21 years; by her parents; by her Blanchard Family: Richard and Mary Blanchard, of Raleigh; Jack and Leigh Blanchard, of High Point and their children, Alexandria and Clay; and Robert and Leah Blanchard, of Rockford, AL and their children, Georgia and Celia; by her aunts, uncles, cousins and many other family and friends; and by her faithful companions: Wrigley and Maddux.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home (200 SE Maynard Road in Cary), with Funeral Services to be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 3 PM at Ephesus Baptist Church (6767 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh). I always looked forward to seeing Rhonda's smiling face each morning as she was walking down the hallway at Cary when she came to work at Cary High School...I certainly miss that, even today...R.I.P. Rhonda

Rhonda will always be remembered so fondly by all. She had a way of speaking to all students and teachers at Cary High and lifting them up, always joking and laughing. She lived a happy life with her family, students, her dogs, her friends and of course Joe. We still miss her but the love carries us through the sadness of her passing too soon. Love, Margil

We knew Rhonda years ago at Cary Elementary where our boys went to school. We were devastated to hear of her passing, and send our thoughts and prayers to her family. Rhonda was beloved by everyone we knew including our family. She was always so kind, friendly, full of joy, and a wonderful person! Our years at the school were made extra special having known Rhonda! We thought so highly of her and she will always be fondly remembered!

Ed and Mary, I'm so sorry for the loss of your lovely daughter. I was just watching the beautiful story about her on WRAL and noticed my friend Ed (from NC State) in a quicK shot. It seems Rhonda was truly a beloved mentor and coach. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Icannot recall a time when Rhonda did not show joy and compassion. She was a friend to our family, a cherished young lady who followed her heart, was the compassionate role models for others, and made her parents and family proud. Heaven is brighter, but her light will be missed. Love to all who knew her for the joy they will miss, but in her honor, pay it forward. Remember her joy would be to see her impact. Special wish to Ed and Mary in this moment no parent expects.May God be with you each day. Billie Branam &family

Joe and family, we just heard from our daughter, Brittany, that Rhonda had passed away. We are sorry for your loss and know words can't satisfy the grief you are feeling. We still remember how Rhonda was so great with the kids she coached. Regardless of the pressures of games, etc... it was always great to see how winning wasn't the only thing that mattered.

Our prayers are that Rhonda is now with our Lord and that her life will be a catalyst to attract family and friends to Him as well. Please accept our condolences and very best wishes under the circumstances.

Sincerely, Al and Judy Lopez

So very sorry for your loss; our thoughts and prayers will remain with you in the days, months, and years ahead. Although you and all who knew her will never stop missing her, hope you take some comfort in knowing the difference she made in the lives of so many.My son James played on the boys' tennis team for the past two years and he will always carry with him her words of praise, support, and encouragement. I will always remember a conversation I had with her a couple of months ago: she asked where my other son (who has autism) would go to high school this upcoming fall, and she assured me so kindly that if he came to MCHS, she would take good care of him. I know she would have.

When I first met Rhonda, she impressed me as one with a genuine teacher's heart. With great energy, deep passion, sharp intellect, and sincere care, she expected the most of her students at all times. Her most unique talent was the ability to link a student's present situation to a fulfilling future. I once heard a coach at NCSU summarize the coach's job: a coach teaches a player to succeed by dreaming about a win, then believing it, and finally achieving it. Rhonda's greatest skill was teaching any student or athlete to win in this way. Most of all, I admired her unconditional love for Joe, and whenever they were together, they inspired everyone they met. Joe and all of her extended family, I am so sad about this untimely loss of the one we all loved. May God bless you at this time.

February 23, 2015

Rhonda was so much more to me than a person. She was a stamp of approval, signifying that what you were doing in life mattered. Feeling I had her approval meant a great deal as I left the creek. I thought highly of her. Her care to the curriculum assistance students we shared was unmatched. I believe the last conversation we had at the FS echoed this. We discussed a new teacher and how that person would work with her CA students, a deeply concerned Rhonda wanted assurance that this teacher would work well with her students. I tried to alleviate this concern. I hope it was alleviated, if it wasn't I'm sure Rhonda let her know. The "Rhonda standard" meant more than going through the motions as a teacher, it meant caring. That's what separated Rhonda. She cared relentlessly for her students--even in off-work hours.

Joe, you and Rhonda represent what is right in this school system--you're the tapestry that holds this thing together; southerners who know what is right and do what is right and achieve everything through hard work. Who take a moment and enjoy the finer things this state has to offer. I can think of nothing else to say but RB was an incredible rock. RIP.

February 23, 2015

Joe, I have been in and out of tears all day as I think about you and RB ... I keep seeing RB's smile and hearing her say "Ms. Simpson, get back to work!" She loved life and made everyone around her smile. I will miss her so much. Please know how much I love you ... Kelley, Kevin and the boys

Over the years we've had the opportunity to hear first-hand from several of her tennis players at our meetings -- they worked hard both on the court and in the classroom, they dressed impeccably for tennis matches thanks to Rhonda's fine taste, and they praised her for guiding them in tennis and in life.
