Richard Allen Obituary

Richard Hamilton Allen

March 16, 1922 - April 12, 2014

Richard "Dick" Allen was born in LaGrande, Oregon and lived all of his life in Oregon. His family moved to Chemawa when he was young and as an adult he worked in the family variety store the "Moderne" in downtown Salem. It is there that he met the "most beautiful woman in the world" Rosanne. He swept her off her feet and they were married in 1951. Six rambunctious children would follow and family would become the most significant part of his life. He also was very committed to his work and practiced law for over 50 years with many partners - Hansen, Jones, Stortz, Barlow, Fox, Susee, and Olson. Anyone who knew him would say, "that is a man whose work ethic is unwavering and who lives his life with the highest integrity". He served as receiver for the Benevolent Society and Birds Eye Cannery. He shared a love of cars with his brother Gil and before becoming a lawyer opened a car lot named "Major Motors". He so enjoyed the outdoors - golfing, gardening, feeding the birds, and just sitting on his deck overlooking his yard. He has countless friends and looked forward to annual retreats for golfing, fishing (Detroit Athletic Club), and revelry with ERMI and BBBBB (Black Butte Bad Boys Bash). His sense of humor was so natural and bountiful that even in the most difficult times he would find a way to give us joy, and that quality never left him. About work, he would always say to find something you enjoy doing and then, no matter what it is, do it well. He was preceded in death by his parents Gwendolyn and William Lester and sister Bette. To carry on his legacy of joy, he leaves behind his wife Rosanne, children Gayle, Tod (Stephanie), Zach (Annette), Bart, Clay, and Nancy (Dan), sister Margaret, and brother Gilbert (June). He was very proud of his 11 grandchildren and 10 great grand children. Arrangements are being made through Virgil. T. Golden Funeral Service. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 16 at St. Joseph's Church at 2pm.

Rosanne,

I just learned of Dick's passing today.. I have been thinking of him these past several months.. It was a great honor to get to know Dick over these past years. His sense of humor particularly about some our cases made stressful situations easier..I will miss him greatly..

With fond memories,

Kevin and Lynn Crawford.

Dick, It was a pleasure to have you and Rosanne as the senior members of our neighborhood all these years... I always said that you would never sell that Caddy and I was right, just as you never sold your home... I still consider you the senior member and know you will be keeping an eye on what we do... God Bless...
