Dear Mrs. Corbin and Family,

Just to pass on these thought as your husbands legacy lives on in our house even after all these years. Coach Corbin was my O-line coach at Harvard and I find myself passing on the values of perseverance and commitment that I, along with my teammates, learned from your husband as coach to my own children. They may look at me with a puzzled look much the way I did 20+ years ago when I use one of the comments we'd get out on the field but over time I'm sure they will come to value them the way I do.

Sorry for your loss.

Mrs. Corbin and Family:

Please accept my most sincere condolences for your loss.

I am one of the many young men from a less-traveled, little-celebrated place that Coach Corbin discovered. I would say 'saved'.

I come from a place with a 45% HS graduation rate. Where less than 10% of the adult population has post-secondary education. Where median income is 60% of the state average, and unemployment is 60% higher. Where Ivy League coaches do not often scout, or recruit, or visit.

Where a young man can be less than an hour from a place such as Harvard University, and have no knowledge of it ... despite being among the top 1 or 2% of students in his class ... Class President ... National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame inductee.

I was probably not a big risk on paper, but, in order to find a kid like me, you had to look ... hard, and past a lot of environmental red flags.

He was not the first coach that I met. But, he was the first I met under legal circumstances. He did not recruit me, so much as counsel me. He spent a couple of hours on a bitter December morning talking to a working class kid from a mill town about options, choices, challenges, responsibilities ... and dangers associated with the recruiting process, college football, life for a young man like me.

He did NOT speak to me about Harvard very much. He did NOT speak ill of any of any other programs. He educated me.

And that education did not stop once I told him on a bitter Saturday morning in Cambridge that, to his horror, I was ending the recruiting trip early. I was going home.

"WHAT?!?!" he burst. "Why?" he hushed.

I told him I was all set. I did not need anymore time in Cambridge to know that I was coming to Harvard in the Fall.

And I did not stop learning from him after that. While he was not my position coach, he took his responsibility for bringing me to Cambridge very seriously. And on more than one occasion during each of my years there, took time to inquire, advice, butt-in, reprimand, and, yes, parent.

The stories I could share about Coach Corbin and what he did for me, would be challenging to convey in this forum. But, I would like you to know that I owe him, and your family a debt.

If there is anything that I might do in his name, or memory, for you or yours, I am earnest.

Godspeed.

I was a kicker for the Harvard football program from 1988-91. As I said in emails that were going around at the time of Coach Corbin's death... as I was a kicker from the South and Coach Corbin was an o-line coach from New England, I had every expectation that he would not like me much. But he was always VERY kind to me, and that includes a time during my senior season when I was in the middle of a bad (and very depressing) slump. God bless Coach Corbin and all of his family and friends.

Dear Mrs. Corbin and Family:

I am extremely sorry for your loss. I was honored to have Coach Corbin as my line coach at Harvard. His enthusiasm and passion for football, his sense of dignity, and his desire to be the best coach he could be, made him a great example for all the young men who were fortunate enough to play for him. He will be missed, but remembered fondly, by me and many, many others.

Dearest Cousin and Family,

Words cannot begin to express the sadness and emotion I felt when my Mom called last week to tell me of your loss. He was an awesome man and I feel privileged to have known him as long as I did and to have him be a part of my (our) family. I will pray for God to help give you the strength you need in this most sorrowful time in your life. My prayers also go out to your children, having lost my Dad just 3 years ago, I can somewhat understand the pain and sense of loss they are feeling, I say somewhat because at least we all kinda got a chance to say good-bye. You all never got that and for that I am very, very sorry. But he is not gone, just from his physical body, so you can each still say Good-bye in your own way and know that he will hear you. I wish I could be there but my health and the distance does not permit that at this time. You have my Mom thou and You can look to here as she has many times looked to you for love and support. I will make a donation to the suggested charity in Richard's name. My thoughts, Love and Prayers are with you all in this time of sorrow.

Your always loving cousin, Judi Gaines Clarity

Dear Ruth Ann and family,
Life is fragile, we say to many when death becomes a personal reality. When it happens so unexpectedly, it takes some time to accept what has happened.Coincidently, both of us have had this experience. We are blessed to have had remarkable mates for our partners.
They have left their legacy with the cherished children and
grandchildren. The families will always be there with the love and support and with extra caring that your beloved husband, Richard, would have bestowed on you. May you find the strength to get through this grieving and come to remember the wonderful times you shared. Love, Barbara Burnstine

Ruth Ann and family,

Having read through all of these touching comments during this most difficult of time, I honestly feel a part of a very special and fortunate fraternity. Those that can say without hesitation that a single individual dramatically impacted their lives. There are few people that have the combination of talents that coach Corbin had and the enthusiasm to use them. I feel blessed that he was at Ashland High School in the late sixties. Coach made me and many others better in many ways.

Dear Mrs. Corbin and family:

I am writing to express my deepest sympathies. There are a handful of people whose impact literally changes the direction of our lives.

Growing up in a small town in western Pennsylvania I could have never dreamed of getting the opportunity Coach Corbin gave me. When he recruited me, he gave me the confidence to compete both academically and athletically at Harvard.

That experience rounded out the foundation that my parents gave me. I was blessed to have known him.

You are in my prayers.

Sincerely,

Dear Ruth Ann & Corbin Family:
I'm thankful for the day Coach Corbin walked into my little steel-mill high school in Industry, PA in 1988. Coach's trademark tenacity made it possible for me to attend Harvard where I played my years on the O-line for him. He exposed me & many other players from Western PA who otherwise had little to no exposure to the likes of Harvard (embarrassingly, up to that point, I thought it was in England). I know I speak for many when I say he had quite the impact on us boys 'away from home' in our formidable years. He will be missed & I'm sorry that I will not be able to attend his funeral due to extensive travel this week, but hope these words add to the richness of his memory as they do for all of us young men he helped over the years.

Dear Mrs. Corbin and Family,

My family and I extend our deepest sympathy. Mr. Corbin was a great influence and supporter in my life. He believed in me as person. Taking an interest in my personal life first and motivating me to get an education first and foremost. When I received my college degree and commissioned into the Army as a 2nd LT he contacted me told me he knew I could accomplish this goal and would like updates from me when ever I was home. He always took time to speak to me over the years with a sense of humility that many of his former students-athletes would come back to thank him for the lessons he taught us about respect, dignity and to always give your best effort. He was a man who loved his family and especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Our prayers are with you and your family.

In 1967 I was a small, skinny freshman at Ashland High School and met a giant of a man when I went out for the wrestling team. I would call this man Coach for the next two years until he left for another opportunity but during those two formative years I learned the meaning of endurance, passion, toughness, perseverance, commitment and competition among other things. All qualities that helped me become a better man. Now he's gone...but certainly not forgotten by many of us fortunate to have known him. Happy Trails Coach Corbin. See you on the mat!
