Richard (Dick) Cranford

I was in the AHHS Band from 1965-1969. Mr. Cranford was such a dedicated teacher, expecting the best out of his students. It was through his patience and kindness toward me that I learned to play the flute and piccolo. It is because of his perseverance with helping me and his continuous encouragement to be the best musician possible that I still appreciate playing my flute and piccolo - one of my favorite activities. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Susie, and your family.

Debbie and Susie, I am so sorry for your loss. Being in band in high school was a huge contribution to who I became as an adult. Mr. Cranford not only taught me music, but other seemingly unrelated life skills that still bring a smile to me to this day when I use them. Sewing, ironing and repairing those darn band uniforms was certainly a chore, but I can still see Mr. Cranford showing me how to iron a crease or how to hem a pant leg. The memorization skills alone are invaluable. I don't think enough credit is ever given to teachers like Mr. Cranford who have influenced generations of kids over the years with barely a thank you. He certainly made a difference in my life.

If Mr. Cranford's family or friends knew of me at all, it was probably via a frustrated complaint. Here is my belated apology. As a band member during all four years of high school, I learned early on that Mr. Cranford set high standards. For those moments members felt pride in accomplishment, we owe Mr. Cranford a debt of thanks. From the photo, it looks like Mr. Cranford came to accept a bit of facial hair. I came to appreciate jazz and classical music, learned about working as part of something biggerand the fact that some teachers, like Mr. Cranford, deserve more respect.

Thank you, Mr. Cranford, for all the love and support you gave to me growing up in the Alamo Heights HS Band. You enabled me to be a professional bassoonist, musician, and music educator, for my adult life. I will never forget how tough you could be on all of us in the band, but your dedication and love of music always showed through. I will forever be indented to you. To Susie and family, my prayers and wishes for peace are with you. Thank you, Mr. Cranford!

I played clarinet in his band at Alamo Heights High School my freshman year. I'm glad I got to know him briefly. My prayers are lifted up on behalf of his dear family.

Sorry to hear this. Dick was an incredible musician and arranger. I was glad to know him and perform in community bands with him through the years.

What a wonderful talent, dry wit, and quiet spirit. So many joyous memories.

Susie, I am sad that you have lost Dick, and I pray that you find comfort and peace of mind from the memories of your wonderful life together.

What a beautiful obituary, Susie. At this time of incredible sadness in my heart, the picture brought a smile to my face because I was reminded of all the nights Daddy used to leave the house for dance bands and other performances. I'm especially glad the picture shows him wearing a bow tie, which brought memories of the ridiculous Christmas bow ties he used to weardefinitely my favorites when I was a child! I needed a light-hearted thought.

Dick was a kind and wonderful man who will be missed by everyone who knew him.

There are no words that can describe all I learned from this wonderful sharing man. We have all lost an incredible, sharing, loving person. l will miss you my friend.

My thoughts are with you Susan. I will miss Dick's careful, sensitive ear sitting next to me in band.
