Dear Andrea, Paul, Bob and Ann,
I am deeply sorry for the loss of your Thelma and Dick, my host mom and dad.
Many years have passed since I was their AFS exchange student in 1977-78 but the memory of the year I spent with them, their lovely company, the things we enjoyed together and the pleasant and funny conversations we had will never fade away. We could only meet twice since then, but we kept in touch. Last time I called was in July 2012. I was in the US but, unfortunately, I could not come to Tucson. I promised to come and see them next time. It is painful to realize that I will not see them again, but I am sure that I will keep them in my heart for the rest of my life.
I hug you, with love.

I will forever hold Dick Dahlen in my heart. He was always a gentleman and so giving of his time. He helped fill a great loss when my own father died. The many memories of time spent having dinner with him and his family will always be special. No one will be able to fill his shoes. I thank God for the chance to have had Dick Dahlen in my life.

We first met Dr. Dahlen at Andrea and Larry's wedding. Little did we know at the time, he was going to play such an important role in the lives of our own children. Our three boys enjoyed many amazing summers at Camp Mishawaka, due in large part to the enouragement of Dr. Dahlen. I was a bit nervous about sending my oldest off, but Dr. Dahlen seemed to have all the right words for a jittery mother. Thank you for sharing your wonderful husband and father with our family. God Bless you all.

Heartfelt condolences to the Dahlen family from the Vance/Stanton families. Upon my return to Tucson, Dr. Dahlen called me and said, "Vicki, your mother tells me you have three boys. I want to tell them about Camp Mishawaka. How old are they?" I told him that they were 7, 4 and newborn. He said he would call back when they were a little older. All three sons spent many a summer there and Greg and Charlie were counselors. The tradition continues, Robert's stepson will be a camper there this summer. Thank you, Dr. Dahlen!

I don't believe I would have ended up in Tucson without Dick Dahlen and the Dahlen family. Dr. Dahlen was a really good guy with a great sense of humor, and we will miss him. Our sympathies, prayers, and positive energy to Thelma, Andrea, Paul and the family.

I remember vividly the yearly phone calls to recruit my boys for Camp Mishawaka. Avid tennis players kept them here throughout the summer, but I always knew when summer was approaching.....Dick's phone call came like clockwork. "Isn't it time your boys learned how to battle mosquitoes in the woods of Minnesota?" We've lost a sweet, kind, gentle man.
