Richard (Dick) Feller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2022.
Richard (Dick) Lawrence Feller was born in Salem, Oregon, on October 7, 1932, to Margaret (Peggy) and Albert (Ab) Feller. He sadly passed away August 31, 2022, just one month shy of his 90th birthday. Dick spent his childhood in Salem. Some of his fondest memories were attending 1st grade at Bush elementary and working at his father's gas station where he remembered eating ice cream all day. In 2nd grade his family moved to Rosedale Oregon where he attended Rosedale grade school through the 8th grade. In the fall of his junior year at North Salem High School he enlisted in the ROTC program as a Marine. After high school he joined the Marine Corps serving until January 1952. In 1952 he started a career as a draftsman for the Oregon State Highway Department. He was soon promoted to civil engineer and was promoted within the State Highway Department of Oregon finishing his state employment in La Grande, Oregon. If you have ever driven the freeway between Pendleton and La Grande, Dick was instrumental in building that. In 1973 he became a project manager and worked for a number of commercial companies. This work took him to Ontario, Oregon, and as far as Colorado Springs, Colorado. He completed his career in Seattle Washington. He met the love of his life Gayle Albert in a grocery store parking lot in Dallas, Oregon. He and Gayle married in December 1954 and went on to have five children in six years. The last one being born when Dick was just 27 years old. Gayle and Dick were very much in love! Dick was beloved by all who knew him. He took pride in being a good husband and father. There was nothing he could not build. He started with a house for his parents, then on to build three more houses for his family, the last one being in Ocean Shores, Washington, where he and Gayle started their retirement. Dick loved to read and keep up on current events. He was always interested in what was happening in the world and enjoyed discussing it with anyone willing to engage. The greatest love was his family. He loved his wife and children and frequently expressed how lucky he was. He is survived by his wife Gayle, his five children Debi (John) Waldron, Terri (Terry) Paulsen, Eddie (Yo) Feller, Heidi (David) King and Jeff (Maryann) Feller, 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his sister Louise Schlegel and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Shriners Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Dick was born with a club foot and he appreciated the surgery and stay at Shriners so much that he fulfilled his promise of becoming a Shriner.

Here I am in February 2024 learning of Dick leaving our earth. It is heavy heart yet filled with many wonderful memories of what an incredible person he was. I
had the great pleasure of working with him in Seattle when he was a Superintendent with S G. Taylor. We became good friends and I spent special times with both he and Gayle outside of work. A true individual filled with wisdom and humor. He will be forever in my heart I send loads of blessings to his family.
Deepest Sympathy, Yvonne Simmons

We are sad to hear our dear and long time friend has passed. We have many fond memories of Dick.
Raising our families together, visiting Dick & Gayle in the many places they lived, the story of Woodie & Dick on a backpacking trip ( carrying a 5 lb canned ham to eat, and so many more. Dick was a man of intergrity and we admired him and cherished him as a friend. We haven't been able to contact Gayle or her family so would appreciate a call. Barbara & Woodie Hays, 503-282-9835 - 4569 NE Cesar Chavez Blvd. Portland OR 9721l. Our heartfelt condolences and love to all the family.
