RICHARD DIRGA

USAF Lt Col Richard Dirga went on his final flight May 13 in Carmichael, Calif. He and his family lived in Nevada County for most of the past 50 years, and many will remember Dick's easy smile, precise mind and gentle, firm heart. He joined the Air Force at just 17 years old. For 19 years he flew as a navigator and weapons officer in Strategic Air Command, and worked with the SR-71, B-52, B-58 and U-2. He earned multiple medals for his service in Vietnam and other areas, and degrees in English literature and electronics. Upon retiring in 1979, he enjoyed careers in medical electronics, marketing, and real estate. He was a valued member of Sierra Presbyterian Church from 1980 and active with many Nevada County nonprofits including KARE crisis nursery and Women of Worth. He said he was the kind of person "who always says yes." He was always learning, always curious, always moving. Throughout his life he flew a straight and compassionate course, and taught us all how to be better people. In his final days he was filled with gratitude for an amazing life. He is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Lynne House Dirga, son Nik Dirga, wife Avril and grandson Peter of Auckland, New Zealand, and son Charles Dirga, wife Natasha and granddaughters Abigail and Grace of Carmichael. A casual friendly memorial service for Dick will be held at the North Star House, 12075 Auburn Rd, Grass Valley on Friday May 31 from 5 to 7pm. All who remember Dick's warmth and smile are welcome.
