Richard Dohm Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2025.
Richard Ryland Dohm, 95, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, in Columbia, Missouri. Born on September 2, 1929, in Hibbing, Minnesota to John W. and Irma (Clark) Dohm, Richard grew up in Hibbing and Minneapolis with his three siblings, John W. Dohm II, Jane Dohm Johnson, and Clark Dohm.

After a brief stint in the navy, Richard ("Dick" to his friends) attended college at the University of Minnesota where he met Louise Vonderhaar. The couple married and moved to Columbia, MO in 1965 after Dick completed his PhD and accepted a faculty position at MU in the Political Science department, where he oversaw the Governmental Affairs Program until his retirement in 1990. They had two boys, Chris and Greg, and enjoyed many years weekending at Thomas Hill Reservoir and vacationing in Grand Marais, MN. The couple separated when the boys were in their teens and remained friendly until Louise's passing in 1998.

Dick had a lifelong passion for tennis and enjoyed many years travelling the world with his long time partner Patsy Brown. The two belonged to the infamous "tennis group" that rarely misses a Wednesday night at Murry's restaurant, as long as they were in town and not on the courts. Dick was known for his warm presence, self-deprecating humor, and legendary frugality.

Richard is survived by sons Christopher Clark Dohm (Ashley Dohm) and Gregory Hathaway Dohm and grandchildren Ryland Dohm, Lorelei Dohm, and Brandon Dohm. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 23, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Shakespeare's Pizza South, 3911 Peachtree Drive.
