Richard J. Doyle

I remember "Dr.Doyle" as I would call him from taking Twig Painting and Advanced Twig Painting at American International College. He would always respond with a resounding, "Yes!" I enjoyed my classes so much. He always gave us a relaxed environment for creativity. Professor Doyle always encouraged my abstract expressionism. One day, I was driving by and some of my fellow students dropped by his gallery. He welcomed us warmly. There I saw and appreciated his great talent. Richard Doyle was a great painter and a wonderful human being. May he sleep peacefully in paradise.

Doyle was a great artist and very eccentric at times. His last book was quite revealing of his sense of humor, which he had a great amount of. I spent many hours sitting with him and being entertained by his talents. It was sad to see him in the last years, but I am glad to have known him and own some of his originals. I met Rich Doyle the twig painter when I took over Angotti's Barber Shop in 1985 or 1986 ( 135 Boston Rd. 4 doors away ). I was there 10 years before I had to leave because of medical reasons. I would always stop by and sit with him on many occasions. He had a weird sense of humor and he was kooky at times, but a GREAT guy and FUN to talk with. He will be missed by many. I wish I had a painting from him. If I knew he doodled on the spot, I would have asked him to do a drawing of me as a Barber. ** May he R.I.P **. Mike Venne

I had Mr. D. at AIC for painting. He was one great (and sometimes insane)guy. I will never forget him!

I attended grammar and high school with RD. As fantastic and unusual his art work is, I can stiil hear his angelic voice singing "Oh Holy Night" for school shows and pageants before it changed of course, it was unforgettable, especially considering how deep his adult voice became. He must be singing with the Angels for sure!

I used to spend a lot of hours sitting with Richard discussing whatever was going on at the time. I married and Richard stopped sitting outside as he had always done. A part of the Pine Point history has now left us.

We have 2 family pastel portraits done by Mr. Doyle, also several sketches given to us when we were there. He always had a great story to tell. We will treasure our artwork and miss seeing him at work.

AS A YOUNG MAN WE USE TO VISIT AND HANG AROUND HIM AND WATCH HIM DO HIS ART WORK. I ASKED IF HE WOULD DRAW MY FACE,HE DID.. I WILL MISS HIM,,I STILL HAVE THE DRAWING AND WILL, AND HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT OF HIM THROW MY LIFE. HE WAS A HAPPY FUN MAN TO KNOW.RIP,YOUR FRIEND FRANCIS

Growing up at pine point I have very fond memories of Mr. Doyle. my dad would go to get his hair cut at Casey the barber next door to the his gallery While he was getting his hair cut I would go and talk to Mr. Doyle He was a very very nice man. I have very fond memories of him God rest his sole

I have known Richard since 1975 when I bought my first lithograph Skippin School. Since then I moved into Pine Point and every time I went there I came home with another picture. I have 36 all framed and in every room. I saw him about 6 weeks ago and came home with my last one from him. We had a nice visit for a couple of hours and unfortunately it would be our last. I will miss you, your sense of humor and all the stuff I received in the mail which I saved everything. You were the Pine Point Icon.

He was a wonderful man who always invited us teens in Pine Point to sit and chat. He is truly a Pine Point icon....i will always remember him fondly. RIP Doyle, you are one of the greats!!!

I am so sorry for your loss I had the pleasure of Richard sketching a pic of my cats for me I still have it and thought of him..he was a brilliant and kind man, he will be missed by so many

I can't stop crying. I took lessons from Richard and we became wonderful friends. God bless his soul. He was a brilliant man and artist.

He was cherished here in Pine point, People would flock around him as he painted, many of us younger. and he would stop and talk to us younger ones, and try and explain his special craft. God bless! And thank you!

Grew up watching him paint in Pine Point outside his business he was so nice and would never have a problem with us going in looking at all the paintings asking many questions... and for that I am grateful as I have a deep love and appreciation for art... Thank you Mr. Doyle RIP

Truly a Springfield icon! My parents (and other family members) own original twig artwork. I loved when we would drive by his shop. It didn't matter if it was day or night. He would be out there working on a masterpiece. Rest in piece. Your talent will be missed.

I remember him well from his painting class when I was a student at AIC. He was a kind,gentle man who had great art talent. I still paint and he has left his mark on me forever. I continued to follow his life afterwards and was saddened to hear he lost his sight and had health problems. He will live on in many hearts,including mine. I will never forget him

Always wished I had his talent and ability to make friends like Rich.

IsxRichard was my first art teacher back in the mid 70's he took me on as a student even though my tender age of 15 was younger than his usual students. I learned so very much from him and loved his zest for life. I will cherish my many lithographs from him and think of him fondly. My sincere condolences.

I am sorry for your loss. We used to own the building next to your brother's. shop on Boston Road and enjoyed him immensely. We have several of his works and enjoy them today

Richie, my cousin, who always kept me laughing. His sense of humor was, at times, bizarre but it was Richie. Among his talents was a beautiful singing voice and my fondest memory is him as a youngster, signing "O Holy Night". RIP

I loved your work from the first time I had lunch in front of one of the paintings at Baystate Medical Center. I now cherish a couple of my own. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent.

A true Pine Point icon. He attended my wedding, showing up in one of his paint stained tee shirts, from rubbing his twig between colors, true to himself. What you saw is what you got with Richard. I spent hours and hours watching classic movies in his back room and he taught me how to develop film in the makeshift dark room in the basement of his studio. Throughout this decline in his health he never lost his sense of humor, as quirky as it was. I am honored to have known this great man and shared time with him.

I always enjoyed watching him painting outside his studio on Boston Road. Rest In Peace

I have very fond memories of my cousin "Richie" as my twin sister and I grew up with him on Paradise Street in Aldenville. Although he was a noted artist he also had a beautiful singing voice. Rest in Peace "Richie".

By far one of the most talented artist I have ever met. He worked wonders with my painting with a "TWIG" of all things and was very fun to be around. I never wanted to take art but he gave me a new perspective about it. His store was amazing and paintings were beautiful. Will never forget his interesting storieshe always told. He will be gladly missed by the AIC people and alum. Thank you for serving our country and making AIC a wonderfull place to enjoy.

Met you years and years ago at your studio on Boston Rd.. You couldn't have been nicer. A genuine good human being.

Remembering Mr. Doyle and attending Twig Painting class. Not being the greatest artist, it was a little intimidating to sign-up for this classbut he was a wonderful teacher who generously shared techniques and helped each student create a beautiful final piece of artwith a twig. Thanks Mr. Doyle, and may God bless.

Richard & I left for Ft. Dix together back in 1968 and became good buddies almost immediately. After basic we both went to different continents and we lost touch. In the 80s I dropped by his studio and Spfd. and until 3 weeks ago I never saw him again. I truly believe the meeting we had was meant to be. God Bless you Richard. You were one of a kind in more ways than one.
