Richard Engle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 14, 2014.

Rev. Dr. Richard W. (Dick) Engle, 80, of Clarks Green, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, March 9, surrounded by his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara (Mitchell) Engle, and his devoted family.

Born Dec. 14, 1933 in Port Crane, NY to the late Richard M. and Laura (Kimball) Engle, he was a graduate of North High School, Binghamton, NY; Baptist Bible Seminary, Johnson City, NY; Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, TX; and earned his Th.D. at Grace Theological Seminary, Winona Lake, IN. He was ordained to the ministry by Fundamental Baptist Church, Indiana, PA, in 1965.

After 10 years of pastoral ministry in Dallas, TX and Indiana, PA, he served on the faculty of Baptist Bible College and Seminary in Clarks Summit, PA for 35 years, investing faithfully and lovingly in the lives of hundreds of students. He retired from the seminary as Professor of Old Testament Literature, Language and Exegesis in 2006. “Doc Engle” was loved and respected by his students and colleagues, trusted as scholar and friend, and a quiet source of strength and encouragement to all – family, friends, and neighbors. He was a faithful member and teacher at Heritage Baptist Church, Clarks Summit.

Also surviving are his children, Diane Henzler and husband, Mark, Managua, Nicaragua and Richard W Engle, Jr. and wife, Cheri, Irvona, PA; sisters Lois Kirby, Spring Hill, FL and Laura Palmer, Rush, NY; brother Donald Engle, Roscoe, NY; and grandchildren Suzanna and Andrew Henzler, and Emily, Jonathan, Kathryn and Abigail Engle.

He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Drewry and a brother, Robert.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, March 18 at Heritage Baptist Church, 415 Venard Rd., Clarks Summit, PA. Visitation will be at the church from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with the service following. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Dr. Richard W. Engle Memorial Scholarship Fund of Baptist Bible Seminary, 538 Venard Rd., Clarks Summit, PA 18411, or online at ww2.bbc.edu/donations.

Dear Barbara and family,
What a glorious day it will be when we all together 'see Jesus'. Once again I am reminded of how precious in the sight of God is the death of His saints. May our Shepherd Jesus bring you peace, joy and comfort in these days of separation from the one you love.
Dr Engle tried his best to teach me Hebrew, exegesis, theological inquiry and all those wonderful skills. The one skill he modeled above many others was scholarship, genuine care and compassion for his students. Dear friend, you will be missed.

I have many wonderful memories of my 11 years in Clarks Summit at Heritage Baptist and at BBC. It is a privilege to know the Engle family and to have had Dr. Engle as a teacher at BBC. My prayers are with you during this difficult time of sorrow and rejoicing at the same time. "We sorrow but not as those with no hope!"

What a blessing he was to so many. Even though I didn't have him for a professor, I still got to know him and his family. He will be missed by all but it is wonderful to know he is with my dad and sister in heaven. God bless the family during this time.

Dear Engle Family,

Mr. Engle was one of my professors at BBC. He tried his best to impress upon me the need for careful exegesis and a grasp of the Word. He did the best he could! :-) But, the most important thing he taught me was to love others and be available. He did that for me.

A couple years ago I saw him at the GARBC conference and was able to personally thank him for his impact.

May the Lord give you HIs great grace during this time of grief.

Larry (Bissett) and I (Deb Bowser) have fond and challenging memories of being in Dr. Engles classes. He was a humble scholar who challenged us to think and understand the Word in deep ways. Our sympathies go to your family at this time of grieving his absence.

Praise God for the comfort of knowing that Dick is now with his Lord and that we will see him again some day in his new and perfect body.
