Richard FIELDS Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Jan. 2 to Jan. 3, 2015.

FIELDS, Richard (Dick)
There is no greater joy nor greater reward than to make a fundamental difference
in someone's life.
Dick (Richard) Fields of Calgary passed away on December 29, 2014, at the age of 97 years. He came into the world on December 10, 1917, with the attitude of, 'Let's go!' – and that is what he did!! Dick grew up in Calgary and completed his grade nine before beginning an apprenticeship in carpentry. He soon realized that he wanted to be his own boss and go his own way. With the help of his father, he started a small bicycle business, Western Cycle Works. His friendly demeanor and strong work ethic made him well known in the bicycle world. He helped many young kids buy their first bicycle and taught them how to keep their bikes in good repair. He worked hard, but was determined that life was not all about work. His goal was to retire at 50 and he attained that goal. He and Norma then began a life of travel and adventure world-wide. During these travels, Dick particularly enjoyed meeting and interacting with the local residents and especially loved the kids, always carrying treats to share. Dick was accepted and loved by all those he met. He was a self-made and self-educated man and those close to him truly benefitted from this gift. He greeted people with a friendly smile and a generous heart. Dick was predeceased by his parents, one brother and two sisters. He was also predeceased by his wife Norma, son Don and his second wife, Jeanne. Left to mourn him are his beloved daughter, Gayle, daughter-in- law Kay Fields, grandsons Kelvin and Warren, three great-grandchildren (Emilie, Ethan, and Kailie), his honourary granddaughter (Jannie Alexander), and many extended family. The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers of the Woodlands Unit of the Beverley Glenmore Age Care Centre for their care, kindnesses, gentleness, and friendship with Richard. As Dad so loved children, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Calgary Alberta Children's Hospital, 2888 Shaganappi Tr NW, Calgary, AB T3B 6A8. A private family gathering will be held on Sunday, January 4 and a Celebration of his Life will be held in mid-February. Messages of remembrance may be left for the family at www.southcalgaryfuneralcentre.ca. SOUTH CALGARY FUNERAL CENTRE and CREMATORIUM (at Lake Fraser Gate). Telephone: 403-297-0711. Honoured Provider of Dignity Memorial.

For 35+ years Dick was a part of my Nana (Jeanne's) life, but it was his friendly, interested in all nature that quickly made him a special part of ours as well. He will be missed.
Sending our heartfelt condolences,

My thoughts are prayers are with all the family at this time. I hope that with your fondest memories comes a smile to your face that will heal your broken hearts. Grandpa will forever remain in my heart. Thank's Grandpa for being you. You were one of the best. I'll tie on a pair skates this week and go for a spin, just for you ! Love you, Jannie

Sorry to hear about the passing of Richard on Monday. He was the roommate of my father David at the Beverly Centre for the last year. My dad, brother, sister and I will all miss Richard and his gentle, positive nature. All the best to his family and friends while you celebrate his valuable life. Take care and best wishes,
