Richard Fineberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 8 to Dec. 9, 2022.
On Monday morning, December 5th, 2022, Rich at the age of 78, passed away peacefully with his wife Jackie by his side. His nearly two year battle with glioblastoma came to an end, but his fighting spirit, quick wit, and passion for life will live on forever.

Rich was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, the oldest of three children to Harold and Esther Fineberg. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1967, where he met the love of his life, Jackie, and shortly after getting married they moved to San Francisco, CA. It was in San Francisco where Rich would begin his 40-year career at the professional services firm Haskins & Sells, later to become Deloitte.

During his Deloitte career, Rich held several leadership roles including San Francisco Managing partner for the Audit Practice, Northern California & Hawaii Managing Partner, West Region Managing Partner and National Managing Partner for Market Development. He was also elected and served on Deloitte's U.S. Board of Directors and Global Board of Directors. But well beyond these roles, it was Rich's passion for people and building teams that he is most remembered for. He left a lasting impression on countless Deloitte teammates and believed passionately that "people do business with people they like" and that you should always "play to win".

After living in San Francisco, Rich and Jackie moved to Walnut Creek, CA in 1971. There they would start their family and spend 45 years in Walnut Creek and Alamo, including a home in Round Hill Country Club near the 16th green, where Rich could frequently be seen practicing his short game. In 2016, Rich and Jackie moved to Pebble Beach, CA, where Rich continued to enjoy life in a location he believed was the most treasured in the world. His days were very full with friends he loved and cherished, as an active member of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Rich was actively involved in many boards and non-profit organizations, including the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. the Sunset Cultural Center, Round Hill Country Club and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. He was a life-long learner, having picked up the game of golf and learning to play the piano later in life, a lesson to all that you are never too old to start new hobbies. Rich was an avid sports fan, bleeding green for the Michigan State Spartans, and enjoying countless 49ers and Giants games. But his #1 sports love was the Golden State Warriors, and as a 25-year season ticket holder, he could frequently be found in his courtside seats alongside his family, enjoying the action with a hot dog and Diet Pepsi in hand. Rich was also passionate about traveling and seeing new places, having enjoyed several trips with Jackie and family.

But most importantly, Rich was about relationships. He believed that relationships mattered. Whether it was the family he loved, partners at Deloitte he worked with, friends he shared laughs with, or the amazing people he most recently met who helped him with his fight against cancer, he lived his life with a passion to build and maintain relationships. For this he will be always remembered and forever loved by those who were fortunate to have a relationship with him.

Rich is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jackie, his sons Steve (Jenni) and Ben (Amie), daughter Sara (Sean Tuttle), brother Mel, sister Sharon (George Kent), and 6 grandchildren (Jacob and Elizabeth Fineberg, Josie and Sam Fineberg, and Kelsey and Emily Tuttle). At Rich's request, there will be no formal services, but rather a party in early 2023 with friends and family.

If you choose to make a donation in Rich's memory, two organizations he was supportive of are the Sunset Center (www.sunsetcenter.org) and Montage Health (www.montagehealth.org).

Hi Jackie,
I am so saddened to hear of Rich´s passing. He truly was a remarkable man. He is responsible for my career with Deloitte as he hired me in 1981. He was always very supportive of the many roles I had while at Deloitte. He will be missed.
