Guest Book
Passed quietly at home, Tuesday, October 23, due to congestive heart failure. He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Barbara; his older sister, Patricia; younger half-sister, Anne and half-brother, George. He is survived by a younger brother, Robert (Pat); he is also survived by his seven children, Susan Fisher, Bryant (Becky), Mark (Olivia), Alison (Don) Steel, John (Diane), Mary Elizabeth (Lyle) Albaugh, and Grace; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Born May 17, 1923, Richard grew up in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, graduating from Central Catholic High School in 1941. After serving in the Army, he attended The College of the Holy Cross and graduated in 1947. He married Barbara Mumford in 1949 and began his career as a used car salesman at Motor Square Garden in East Liberty. In 1953, after a visit from his high school classmate, John F. (Jack) Donahue, he left to enter the fledgling mutual fund world. Joined by their friend, Tom Donnelly, the Central Catholic graduates founded Federated Investors in 1955, now one of the largest independently owned mutual fund companies in the US. Today, with over 1800 employees world-wide and assets in excess of $430 billion, the firm continues to manage money on behalf of major banks, broker dealers, registered investment advisers, and institutional clients around the globe. As President of Federated Securities Corp., then Chairman, Richard was the head of distribution and the consummate salesman who loved working with brokers to help their customers achieve their financial goals. For over 60 years, he traveled extensively and relished making sales calls well into his early 90's. When his travel slowed, he continued to arrive daily at the office until the age of 95. Richard lived his Catholic faith in small daily acts and in his generosity. He was an active participant and board member in a variety of local charities with a particular soft spot for Catholic charities such as Central Catholic High School, St. Paul Cathedral, Sacred Heart, LaRoche College, Little Sisters of the Poor, and many more. He leaves behind wonderful relationships as a result of his love of work as well as his passionate pursuit of golf. He truly enjoyed mixing the two and will hopefully be remembered by his many friends at Federated and the Pittsburgh Field Club. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Friday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Saturday, Mass of Christian Burial St. Paul Cathedral 10:00 a.m. Interment at Calvary Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Little Sisters of the Poor. freyvogelfuneralhome.com

I wish to extend my family’s deepest condolences to the Fisher family, and mine, in particular, to Brick and John with whom I worked at 7th avenue back in the late ‘70s. I’m not sure there’s a word that could measure up and fully describe your dad. He was certainly a character who enjoyed family, life, raising money, and hitting a golf ball. I’ve attached a photo from half a life time ago that captures a part of the “Mr. Fisher” as I knew him. Yes, that’s my dad on his right - both were making a fashion
statement with their golf slacks in those days. He sure will be missed … Best wishes and God’s blessing to all of the Fisher family.

Dear Fisher Family,
I had the great honor to work with Mr. Fisher. Although I left Pittsburgh 16 years ago, we never lost touch and he continued to be a mentor and role model to me and a man of great wisdom to all fortunate enough to know him.

Though I haven't seen Dick in many years, he was a friend and a great classmate. He made my years at Holy Cross so memorable. Anyone that had the privilege of knowing him will never forget him.

Dear Fisher Family,
My dad worked at Federated for over thirty years. He always admired and respected Mr. Fisher. He enjoyed his conversations with "Richard B" at the Federated security desk. Mr. Fisher always made my dad's day. I know he is in heaven with his wife and driving around in Jaguars.
When my dad passed, Mr. Fisher was so kind to our family. His gift to my mom and me will never be forgotten.
May God Bless!

Condolences to the entire Fisher family. I will miss his smile, jokes, his first class way of doing everything....and most of all our long lunches where we discussed almost every issue in the world. I am blessed to have known him.
