In May of 1992 I was at a conference in Denver. I asked Richard what he was going to do that summer. He told me he was going to dig at Bethsaida. "But there is no Bethsaida" I said. "Oh yes, it has been found " he said. He suggested that I get a group together and join them. In 1993. I did just that and took 19 people to Bethsaida in 1993. I was made a director of the dig and continued taking students there for twenty years, and giving talks on Bethsaida at International conferences. Richard was always kind, and encouraging. Like him I was a runner, and ran the Boston marathon. Richard was one of the greatest influences on my life.

One teacher at UHART who really saw the potential in me. As I was finishing up my bachelors degree, he was the person to tell me I should consider a PhD in history and that he would help me find a program / write me a letter of rec. I got an education in Jewish history, biblical history and history of the Middle East from taking just 1-2 classes with him. Wonderful, interesting teacher. Thanks Professor Freund and my condolences to your family .

Dearest Eliane and family,
We are so grateful to have spent time with Richard, in the early days and when he came to Omaha to stay with us several years ago. He was the most incredible teacher! His lectures were spellbinding! When he read Torah at Lauren's Bas Mitzvah, people were so moved by his voice in conversation with the text. We have the fondest memories of all of you at the old Beth Israel when the kids were young. He lead an amazing life! He was brilliant, kind, and funny. We loved every minute we spent together with you both. The universe is dimmer without his great light. We will miss him always. May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, and may his memory be for a blessing. Our deepest and most sincere condolences.
With love, Dennis and Susan

I am so, so sorry. I just heard about this. I am a filmmaker and Richard was so helpful and inspirational to me! We even sort of named a character in an upcoming film after him! I hope you can find some peace during this. Best wishes, Larry Kasanoff

Though I never met Richard physically, he was a major part of my life and the lives of my colleagues. We had the privilege of working on some documentary programs about his research and discoveries. He was a larger than life personality, and so full of kindness and wisdom. He inspired me to continue reading about history and to never forget the past. Richard was truly a gift, and his passing is incredibly sad to hear. He leaves behind such a legacy. My deepest condolences to his family.

Elaine & Family,
Richard was an incredible scholar. I was lucky enough to hear an unforgettable presentation on the archaology of the Holocaust that he gave to students and faculty at Towson University a few years ago. When I told Richard of my own Lithuanian grandfather, he took great interest and invited me and my students to attend one of his digs. Unfortunately, His work was and is so important in providing concrete evidence of the Holocaust. Hamakom yinakhem,

I will always treasure my memories of Richard. I learned so much from him, about Jewish History, about life, friendship, and scholarship. An exceptional storyteller, very funny too with a wicked sense of humor and wit; I agree with Eliane that Richard lived many lifetimes in his 67 years and accomplished so much.
I realized that from 2004 when he had the stem cell procedure, and started living on borrowed time with a mission, he lived 18 years ,in Jewish tradition the Hebrew letters for number 18, also means Chai( Life) and for Richard a Life well lived. He will be missed not only by Eliane, their sons and his family, but by us his friends, his students and all those who were privileged to have known him. His memory will always be a blessing ! Veronica and Family

Eliane and Family,
We, along with the entire Beth El family, are mourning Richard's loss. He was such a force in this community, both through the Temple and the Greenberg Center. His lectures were full of humor and brilliance; he was our very own Indiana Jones. Eliane, we are grieving for you and your loss. There are never enough words, just emotions. May you and your family be comforted by all those who are holding you in their hearts today.

Hello from Halifax, Nova Scotia. I was privileged to hear Dr. Freund speak via Zoom several times about his groundbreaking research work, discovering Holocaust sites. This was such important work, appreciated by the whole world. I particularly was fascinated to watch his work recreating the Ponar escape tunnel, since many of my husband's family died there. Sending deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, and appreciation for his insight, compassion and humanity. May his memory be for a blessing.

Dr. Freund was amazing. Even people not interested in religion were drawn into his explanations of how things really transpired. He had a special ability to share information with those of us who had very little knowledge of the history of Judaism. It was truly a special honor to have learned from him. He will be missed by so many.

Richard was a true brother, much loved by me and our family. We have so many cherished memories of our lives together, from Omaha to New England, and summers in Israel. We are so blessed that you were given an additional lifetime with us, 18 years after the match and transplant. May his soul be gathered to our ancestral eternal home. You have served your God and people well, my brother. May your memory forever be a blessing, and may your works inspire generations.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I knew Dr. Freund from the Jewish community here in Omaha, but I also took an upper-level religion class at UNO about 25 years ago. There are not many classes that I have taken where I can say that this class changed the way I think about a certain topic, but his class did. I hope that your entire family and community of friends have many fond memories of Dr. Freund and that you are comforted by those memories.

Dr. Freund was my professor at University of Hartford. He invited me on a few of his famous research trips in Israel and Lithuania and even helped me get into graduate school in London. There was never a time he shied away from writing a letter of recommendation or giving much needed advice. He truly cared about everyone he interacted with and taught one of the most important lessons when studying history: It is always about the people. He provided me with experiences that changed my life and I am going to miss him dearly.

Richard was truly one of a kind. A recognized scholar with endless accomplishments and innovations and a kind and sweet man. He was a great teacher and lecturer. What a great loss for his family, his friends, his profession and community. We carried the same last name but were not related. He and Elaine have been my dearest friends. I shall remember Richard along with my dearest wife who adored and respected Richard as well.

I am reeling in shock and disbelief! Richard Freund was the effervescent, full of life, joy and laughter, human being who was always funny and always brilliant, both at the same time. He was one of the people we were all certain would be blessed with the proverbial 120.
It isn´t fair.
When I saw the Rabbinical Assembly email announcing a death in the Freund family, it had to be one of Richard`s parents or an uncle or an aunt - it couldn´t be him. The man with the Groucho Marx face and black-rimmed glasses and mustache he missed nothing but the cigar. He had the wit, the humor, and the subtlety of a great comedian. And he combined it with the knowledge of a rabbi, professor, archaeologist, and historian, plus the values of the mentch that he was through and through.
I retired early from Beth El in La Jolla in 2001 because of a severe medical diagnosis. But long before that, during the UCSD years that he and Eliana raised their family just doors away from my synagogue, they were both my congregants and my mentors,Symbols of everything that´s a congregation needed to revere. Richard lectured in our shul and throughout the community, not from obligation but from a desire to educate anyone interested in the Jewish Experience, and to excite them about their history and heritage.
Miraculously, I survived a terminal cancer so our paths crossed again as Old Vilnius became a project of his archaeological passion and simultaneously the Investigation of my roots as a Litvak. Zilvinas Beliauskas, the Catholic scholar who heads the Jewish Public Library in the Lithuanian capital reported to me the immense excitement Richard generated as the Great Synagogue in "The Jerusalem of the West" was being uncovered by Dr. Freund.
With pride I will continue to wear and cherish the brown & tan T-shirt this Jewish Indiana Jones gave me 30 years ago from the Beit Tzefafa dig. He proved that the village turned out to be the critical turning point of the Jewish revolt against the Romans. It was Richard´s dig at the site of the fateful battle that resulted in nothing less than the creation of the Galut, the Jewish Diaspora, for the next 2000 years because of a freak accident on the Commander´s horse! Yet Richard, very excited, still treated this discovery with the simplicity of just one more project in the numerous jewels that shined from his brilliant breast plate, like the High Priest of old, a true Kohen Gadol.
One cannot say anything about him without having been inspired by the relationship that Richard and Eliana had. I saw it as nothing short of a continuing lifelong passionate love story. They fulfilled the Biblical injunction to "cling to each other and become one." I can´t imagine his devoted wife Eliana without him, nor can I picture his children not engrossed by his countless stories with his eyes open wide behind those Groucho glasses, and joining in the laughter emanating from the voice of a human being who was and will remain forever young. Richard Freund was Groucho´s "magic word."

My Rabbi, my Teacher, your memory will always be a blessing!

Richard was a dear colleague. We met in May 2019 to discuss bringing his archeology expertise to the Jungfernhof concentration camp, an abandoned Nazi concentration camp in Riga Latvia, where my grandparents were killed. Richard´s response was quick and enthusiastic. His commitment to shed light on this horrific history and to honor all victims seemed to have no limits. He was devoted to revealing the truth, searching for evidence, and countering resistance and denial with his boundless energy and curiosity. His youthful spirit surprised me again and again. Working with cutting edge technologies, he combined a deep regard for the past as he set sail for the future. He was afraid of nothing, covid, war, risk was integral to the work. He was happy to do the best work he could do. His legacy is great, and he will be missed.
