Dr. Geldard was very important to me. He took me seriously and taught me well. Additionally, he was my best friend's father, so I was able to see what a father daughter relationship looked like. I appreciated his philosophical way of looking at the world.

Richard, then Mr. Geldard to me, was my English teacher at Taft Preparatory School, Watertown, Connecticut.
The year was 1964 and I was a scholarship boy from Santa Fe, New Mexico.
My first theme was about a solo trip in the mountains that had preceded my translation to Preppieland - I described things familiar to me: eating squirrels I had killed with a slingshot, climbing 12,000 foot mountains and sleeping in an army surplus 'fartsack.'
Despite my dubious adherence to the rules of grammer, Richard praised my story and took on the heavy task of bringing me into the world of literacy.
Three years later he sponsored me into the Taft Independent Studies Program for the first half of my Senior year. I wrote dubious poetry and generally messed around (ok, it was 1967...).
Possibly dissapointing to Richard but I graduated in the upper 10% of my class and went on to earn a graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in Engineering.
We stayed in occasional contact and I sent him short stories based on my New Mexico years post-Taft.
I remember his response to one missive, addressed to 'Mr Geldard': 'I'm Dick, now.'
I owe him a lot.

Warm condolences to his family and friends, colleagues. He leaves a wonderful legacy. Wished I had known him better, and shared thoughts about Greek philosophy and contributions, my ancestor's, and other remarkable gifted individuals throughout history and up to the current day. Based on truth that 'The reward of a thing well done is to have done it." he must be richly rewarded.

We're just learning now of Richard's passing. He and Astrid were good friends of ours for many years, but aging and distance meant we hadn't seen each other in a while. Richard was a delightful conversationalist with a warm, dry humor. He was a pleasure to be with and we will miss him.

Dr. Geldard opened up a whole world for me at Chadwick School in the 70s. Starting with Classical Greek Theatre (Euripides in the original Greek) when I was 12, straight through to Joyce, Doctorow, Roth, Dostoyevski, & Solzhenitsyn by the time I was 16. He was adept at making literature, exciting. He was a great teacher!

Richard Geldard is someone that I have continued to talk about as recently as the past week, an English professor, or teacher I guess you call them when you're in prep school, but he also taught a psychology class and thought as result of my performance in that class that I should be a psychiatrist.
I laughed at him.
But he told me that he still thought I would make a good physician and that I should definitely take all the science prerequisite courses in college to be premed, because it would be too hard to go back and take them later.
That advice I took to heart, and it did change my life. Plus I write pretty good , lol.
RIP, DG. Age 88.

My condolences to Astrid and all of Richard's family.
Richard welcomed me into his life from stranger, to student, to mentor/apprentice to friend. In the last couple years, I'd offer to fix, build ... do something productive while I was at his home. He'd always say, "No, Ron. Just come and visit." followed by him telling me of the virtue of just being together and sharing stories, ideas ... good company. I loved and learned a lot from Astrid and Richard's kindness and easy hospitality.
