The year was 1962 and I was age 16 and watching Duck Goddard´s weather forecast and he was calling for hvy snow followed by squalls. It snowed a ton and school was called off and the next four days a mix of drifting and furnace problems resulted in school being cancelled. So we had an extra week added to our Christmas vacation. After that I was a fan and I never missed a forecast. Dick became a member of my family as I watched the 6 o´clock weather and shared my dinner time with Mr Goddard. Ever since I have become a fan of weather forecasting and have learned the "how and why" weather occurs. Thanks to Dick´s influence I am able to make a pretty good forecast for my son´s landscape company! My family and friends refer to me as Dick´s protege which is quite an honor! I also grew up with cats and dogs and have ha three cat buddies for the last 35 years. I appreciate Dick´s efforts to protect our extended family animal companions! And as I daily observe the weather, many times I recall Dick´s unscripted manner of presenting the weather in a truly human manner. There will never be a "weather person" to replace him. I am thankful that I was able to share my life with him remotely! Bill Hegedus

Use to watch channel 8 all the time when I lived near Cleveland. After my dad passed away I moved out of town & couldn't watch channel 8 no more & I missed out on all the news & the Big Chuck & Lil John show. In more recent years I learned of that show ending its run which in itself was a sad day for Cleveland & now this, the passing of Dick Goddard. Lets just say it'll never be the same in Cleveland ever again. RIP Dick Goddard. The BEST weatherman in all of tv. We'll forever love ya & miss ya my friend.

A gentle, kind man I had the privilege to know and work with intermittently at animal rescues..this wonderful man inspired thousands and brought smiles to millions,as well as millions of wagging tails to his four foot fans. A beloved forecaster with an eye for the beauty of nature and a deep respect for the power of weather. I loved his humor, kind Spirit, creativity, gentleness, soft spoken communication, you never left him without having insight, a smile and knowledge of how to do better at what ever that may be...he left behind fans of the fur and of human w broken hearts..I think maybe our heavenly Father surely would make him a patron saint for the four foots...carry on dear dick..carry on..til we meet again I pray we all carry on your legacies and do you proud..God bless you..eternal peace and joy unto you always, always loved

I just saw MR Woolly Bear's passing. When I was living in Kent in the mid-60 and NE Ohio off & on thru 1991, there was only one weather forecast that meant anything, and it was his. In the small world category, one of his professors at Kent State was the father of my best friend. I wrote him a couple times over the years and he always replied. The only problem I now have is how will I know what winter will be like without his woolly worm reports?

Many memories of Dick while living next door on Massillon Rd starting when I was around 10 years old in the early '50's. 1) was giving me a bowl of lard for a dish of ice cream. He was on leave from the AF at the time. I recall his grandfather Vern Dickerhoof was present, 2) would come over to play basketball against Robert and myself (2 on 1) for some exercise, 3) in 1958, the summer I didn't go to Florida, we went to the Rubber Bowl to see the Browns and Steelers play an exhibition game and to Hiram College to see the Browns practice in his '58 Corvette, 4) jumping on his pogo stick, 5) attending his wedding in Independence in Sept (?), 1960, 6) going to the AC airport for his overnight shift and listening to his weather report on WAKR, 7) going to visit the station in 1962 and watching the Mike Douglas Shown. In early '64, spoke to Betty White backstage, watched DJ Jim Stagg broadcast, 8) Going on walks with Mrs. Goddard on the acreage in '58. Last talked to Dick in '99 while visiting the old home place. Great memories growing up on Massillon Rd and the kindness shown by Dick Goddard.

I only worked at Channel 8 for a short time in the late 90s. I was a morning news producer, so Dick and I never really got a chance to work together directly. But when I'd come in late at night to start working on the morning show, he was one of the nicest, most genuine people in the newsroom. He certainly didn't have to be. He was already a legend and I was a nobody. But Dick was 100% real. There wasn't a mean bone in his body or a phony one either. More than 20 years later, I still appreciate that. I've worked in TV for almost 35 years now, and he's still one of my favorite former co-workers. And he deserves every word of praise he gets.

As a child in Mogadore in the '50s-early '60s, Dick Goddard fed my weather jones from the time I could say "mammatus cumulonimbus."
His on-screen presence filled a void for a homely 7 year old whose dad had just died. And when Mom somewhat defiantly decided to move to Kansas 2 years later, I cried as hard turning off the TV that last night and saying goodbye to my favorite meteorologist as I did saying goodbye to my family and friends.
Tears again for the handsome statesman of Ohio weather. Fair winds and warm breezes, sir.

I remember when my son was about 2 years old he would scribble on the walls. Not all over the house, but in some areas. My mom used to get so mad at me for it, I told her, I didn't know why he drew on the walls like that, and all I could do was wash the walls down. One day we were sitting in the dining room watching the news. My son was sitting in the middle of the floor playing with a toy. As soon as he heard Dick Goddard's voice he looked up stopped playing with his toy and ran to the wall. My mother and I both said Ohhhhhhh at the same time, his scribbles on the wall were his weather maps. He was doing the weather report with Dick Goddard. We couldn't understand a word he was saying, but he had Dick Goddard's hand movements and body movements down to a science.....it was so cute.....I always think about that...
We loved Mr. Goddard and will always remember him...

I will miss my friend Dick. I walked early APL fundraisers with him. My dog Lord Nelson nipped him as a puppy and he told everyone on air in his broadcast that night. In 14 years Dick was the only one he nipped. When Nelson died he had me come down to the studio and gave me a hug and condolences. I worked with Dick on many a Ghoulardifest and other appearances. He was a very smart man that never missed a beat. Always big hearted for people and the four leggers. I miss him, but the world will miss him too!

Beverly J. Cooper

August 10, 2020

Though I have moved from Cleveland ,It was quite surprising to learn of Mr. Goddard's passing .I have been watching him since I was a child and he always seemed to get the weather report right, whenever I returned to Cleveland the first thing I would do is watch TV for him, but if missed seeing him I would take a ride to WJW once I discovered that an area near the Station was named after him and just sit there.
My granddaughter also loved Mr. Goddard , believed no other weather report than his." She said if Dick Goddard didn't say it then it is not correct."
I am saddened by his lost. My prayers and condolence are with the family.

A sad day, indeed, for Cleveland and anyone who's had the pleasure to meet Dick Goddard. A wonderfully funny weatherman and friend of the animals -- he will truly be missed. A quick story: I was young and attended a junior high in Parma. There was a fence that separated a wooded area from the parking lot of the school, and I recall being very upset because there was a deer on the wrong side of the fence, running back and forth. When I got home, I told my mom figuring we had to do something to help the deer. She didn't know what to do, so she called WJW and asked to speak with Dick Goddard. Without hesitation, he took the call. "Mr. Goddard? It's my daughter..." my mom said. "Uh oh, what'd she bring home?" he replied. I remember my mom just laughing at the comment. And he gave calming advice which helped me. That was over 40 years ago and I remember it as if it was yesterday. He made quite an impression on most people for his kindness, generosity, and calming presence. Rest in a most peaceful Heaven, Mr. Goddard, surrounded by the love and licks of all those animals you worked so tirelessly for. And if you see mom and dad, say 'hi' for me. Condolences to Kim -- your dad was so special.

I grew up watching Dick Goddard, doing the weather at KYW and WJW, and clowning on tv with Hoolie, Chuck, and John.
I never got to meet him, but I got to speak to him on the phone the year before his retirement. I'm sure he was busy, but he took the time to spend ten minutes talking with a middle-aged fan; he was warm, friendly, and gracious.

Kim,
Sending condolences to you for the loss of your dad. I used to work with you (years ago!) at Higbee's/Dillard's in the fragrance department. I was friends with Julie Ann Cashel and met Dick through her. They were both such compassionate people and gave of their time and energy to so many wonderful causes. I remember the one charity function I volunteered alongside Julie Ann and when they served lunch Dick sat with us volunteers rather than the celebrities. He was so down to earth and genuine. The one Woollybear Festival I was lucky to ride in the parade sitting in a vintage Corvette! Your father was always friendly and treated everybody with respect and that's why so many love him and miss him. His legend will live on and may all the wonderful memories of him live on in your heart. Long story short, Dick Goddard was a terrific guy. May his soul have eternal life.
