Mr. & Mrs. Goldman were the ones that encouraged me to continue my aspirations for YoungPeace...way back in 1985.

Here we are, 34 years later and I still hear them.

May they Rest In Eternal Peace.

I Cherrie White, was introduced and enrolled in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in the 1960's via a scholarship... through the kindness and the gift of help to the economic deprived youth. I am still thankful, and to all that contributed. You will always, be remembered. I am helping young people to find their voice... I've found this...God Loves True Service...Cherrie,
The Doll Lady! My maiden name as a youth!(White.)

Like most people involved with Cal Berkeley and the Bay Area, I knew the name Richard Goldman for decades and once enjoyed a pleasant chat with Rhoda Goldman in the 1980s. I initially met Richard, however, at my first Cal Grid Club lunch in 2004 which I attended as the newly designated Cal Faculty Athletics Representative and was flattered when he asked that we sit together.
This was the beginning of a series of discussions ranging across such subjects as US government and politics, religion and American Jewry, and, mainly, Berkeley academics and Cal athletics. These took place at Cal football and basketball games and other social events including small dinners with my wife, Mari. At one in particular, I remember how proudly he told us that his twin grandsons, whom we got to know and admired, were designing a new major in philanthropy at Haas Business School.
Of all, this comment that sticks most clearly with me was during half time of the game in 2007 between 2nd ranked Cal and Oregon State when it was announced that 1st ranked LSU had already lost that afternoon. Richard excitedly said to me, "I never thought that I would live to see Cal ranked #1 in the country."
Although we deeply regret being away and unable to attend the Memorial Service, our great affection and admiration for Richard continue, as well as our thoughts for his family.

Dick and Rhoda Goldman were magnificent friends and generous benefactors to the entire San Francisco Bay Area non-profit community. While they both will be and are missed they instilled in their children and grandchildren that with great wealth comes great responsibilities to others especially those less fortunate. As former member of staff of the World Affairs Council I enjoyed getting to know Mr. Goldman and he was a true gentlemen. RIP and now you and Rhoda can be together again.

Kathleen and I want to express our sympathy to the entire Goldman family. We also want to acknowledge the remarkable dedication to philanthropy that Richard and Rhoda Goldman have shown, not only the Goldman Environmental Prizes but also the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley.

My connection to that philanthropy is personal in two ways. As the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics, I hold one of the five-year chairs that the Goldmans have contributed, and as a result, the research funds from that chair will benefit research both on how the brain works and how the study of political discourse can benefit our nation.

I have also had the good fortune to know two generations of the younger members of the Goldman family. They show the same dedication to philanthropy that Richard and Rhoda demonstrated so magnificently. At this time of mourning, we should remember that the legacy of Richard and Rhoda Goldman is very much alive in their children and grandchildren. As parents and grandparents, we have a very good sense of how important such personal legacies are.
