Richard Groos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 8, 2024.
Richard (Dick Tyden Groos was born in Evanston, IL on December 8, 1929. Soon

afterward his parents, Florence Tyden Groos and Richard Arthur Groos moved to Hastings, MI where Dick spent his childhood and graduated from Hastings High School. He attended Cornell University and graduated with a masters degree in mechanical engineering in 1953. While at Cornell, he met his future wife, Ethel Denton, and the two were married in 1954.

Dick was drafted into the US Army during the Korean conflict in 1953, stationed in the tank ordinance corps in Detroit, MI. Upon his honorable discharge, his engineering career began with a brief stint at Union Carbide Corp in Cleveland, OH. Shortly thereafter he returned to Hastings and eventually took over the reins of the Viking Corporation and the Tyden Seal Company, and eventually became Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Hastings.

Meanwhile, Ethel supervised the growth of a household which would eventually produce five children not to mention a variety of assorted horses, dogs, cats and rabbits. Ethel and Dick were very active in charitable activity in Hastings and surrounding Barry County. Dick served on the boards of: Hastings Area Schools, Pennock Hospital, The Hastings Library, and the Barry Community Foundation, which he helped to create. At Viking Corporation, he oversaw an expansion of manufacturing capacity, product offerings and domestic and international distribution. At 65 years of age, Dick retired, not wanting to "stay too long" at the wheel. He and Ethel enjoyed an active retirement of family, friends and travel

until Ethel's cancer intervened. After losing his lifelong love, he was determined to continue to contribute to his community and enjoy his family. He was humble, kind, and happy even as memory issues began to limit his activities.

Passing away on March25, 2024 in the presence of his family, Dick is survived by five children: Margaret Coleman and Catherine Augenstein of Grand Rapids MI. Tom of Chicago, IL,Fred of Marquette, MI and Nick of Luxembourg.

A celebration of Dick's life will be held at the Legacy, 1550 South Broadway, Hastings MI on May 26, 2024 from 3 PM to 5PM. Memorial contributions can be made to the Ethel and Richard Memorial Fund at the Barry Community Foundation.

Dick enjoyed riding in my different vehicles when we traveled to One of his other companies, Brammel. Rode in a souped up STS black truck and then a Jaguar that leaked water from the air conditioner all over his shoes. Dick was such a kind and gentle man. I will cherish his memory.
