Richard Harrison Gross (Dick), went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 25, 2025, at the age of 97. He was born on February 21, 1928, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Alice Beaton and Leolin Harrison Gross. After graduating from Corpus Christi High School, he attended the University of Texas, where he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity and was affectionately nicknamed "Potsy" - a moniker he never quite managed to shake. He later earned his law degree from the University of Texas Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review and graduated in 1954. After completing his studies, he moved to Houston, Texas, to join the law firm of Baker Botts.
Potsy met the love of his life, Susan Black, on a blind date in 1956, while she was still in college. They were married at Christ Church Cathedral on November 29, 1958, and spent many joyful years in Houston, where they raised their three children.
Enchanted by the Texas Hill Country, Potsy and Susan moved to
Boerne, Texas, in 1993 and opened a shop on Main Street called Heyday. They quickly formed deep friendships in their new community and were especially blessed by the fellowship of St. Helena's Episcopal Church. Their homes in Boerne became places of great adventure and treasured memories for visiting grandchildren.
The quintessential gentleman, Potsy was best known for his sharp mind, gentle spirit, and wry sense of humor. If you wanted to know Potsy, all you had to do was look in his shirt pocket, where he kept a pen and paper at the ready to jot down notes of the day's interests. These notes reflected his deep curiosity and love of learning. He was quick with a quip, and his many "Potsyisms" have become part of family lore. Potsy was devoted to his family and took particular joy in keeping up with the lives of his ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He loved nature, Longhorn football, his men's Bible study, a good newspaper, Peanuts comics, and any news of his children and their families. He was a man of deep faith, voracious reader, and compassionate listener. To speak with him was to feel deeply known and cared for.
Potsy was preceded in death by his father, Leolin, mother, Alice, sister, Jane Mitchell, brother Robert Gross, and his daughter Allison Gross Wallace. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Susan Black Gross; son Richard Harrison Jr. and wife Lori, daughter Susan Gross Reedy and husband Rob, son-in-law John Eldon Wallace and wife Laura; grandchildren William Glenn Reedy, Allison England Foutch, John Eldon Wallace, Jr. and wife Melissa, Hayden Foutch Ostendorf and husband Danny, William Harrison Wallace and wife Ellie, Wes England Wallace and wife Ginny, Elizabeth Ann Reedy, Richard Harrison Gross III, Robert Preston Wallace and wife Kate, Graham Beaton Gross and fiancée Maddie; and great grandchildren Sophie Allison Wallace, Emerson Jane Wallace, Avery Hayes Ostendorf, Wylie Alti Wallace, Betsy Grace Wallace, Stephen Ireland Ostendorf, and baby boy Wallace due in October; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Potsy's life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Helena's Episcopal Church, 410 N. Main St,
Boerne, TX, with a reception to follow in the parish hall. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to St. Helena's Episcopal Church or to a
charity of one's choice.
