Richard Hagan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2025.
Richard Conway Hagan, a dedicated educator, accomplished athlete, and loving father, passed away on February 21, 2025 at the age of 81. Born on December 7, 1943, in Washington, DC, to Ernest Conway Hagan and Winifred Timberlake Hagan, Richard grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, alongside his two brothers. His early years were defined by an exceptional talent in athletics, earning him recognition as a four-sport standout at Fairfax High School in basketball, baseball, track and field, and cross country.

Richard's academic and athletic journey continued at the College of William & Mary, where he played basketball and baseball while earning his bachelor's degree. He later pursued and received a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a teacher at Stephen Foster Intermediate School, Groveton High School and St. Stephen's Episcopal School, where he not only taught but also coached basketball and football teams to memorable successes. Thereafter, Richard served in various sales and marketing roles in the architectural, engineering and construction industries.

A passionate golfer, Richard was a "scratch" golfer in his prime. But his greatest joy came from raising his two sons, Mark and Matthew, in Malvern, Pennsylvania, where Richard was actively involved in their academic and athletic endeavors.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James (Fran) Hagan. He is survived by his brother Michael (Patricia) Hagan, his sons Mark Hagan and Matthew (Dana) Hagan, and his three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Bryson and Zachary. The family will hold a private ceremony to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed to the William & Mary Foundation at 5300 Discovery Park Blvd., 3rd Floor, Williamsburg, VA 23188.

My thoughts go out to Mark and Matt, so sorry for your fathers passing.
Richard and I had many conversations about how proud he was of his sons. After Marks stellar athletic time at Millersville, Richard and I stayed in touch over the past 30 years talking about our views of the world. I will miss our time talking about sports, politics and general thoughts. Even though I haven't seen Richard in years we always laughed debated, and enjoyed our conversation. I will miss his ideas, thoughts, and smart insights. Rest in peace my friend.
