For a huge part of our life, Richard was a great friend to me, Maggie and our five children. I could write essays of fond and funny memories but let this suffice: he gave us Waldo, the handsome, loyal, noble, beloved golden retriever who graced our lives for many years. We miss and mourn and love him still. As we do Richard.

Richard and I were friends for more than sixty years. I will miss him greatly -- loyal, vital, creative, witty, generous to a fault -- especially wonderful with children, who knew immediately that he was a mixture of Hans Christian Andersen, the Wizard of Oz, and Father Christmas. And to me, he was Tennyson's Ulysses, ever determined to drink life to the lees. Onward, great soul, onward. -- Vincent DeBaun
