Richard M. High

Fair winds Richard, you were a mentor and a leader and your memory will live on.

Richard was an outstanding shipmate and a wonderful human being, low key but highly effective as a leader. He made people want to pass the time with him. He exerted a positive aura which attracted others to serve and was always a supportive mentor. Here he is receiving one of many USCG Auxiliary commendations from our Flotilla Commander. R.I.P. Dear Teacher, Mentor & Friend.

This is a picture of some of the most important guys in my life. From left to right is Mark High, Richard High, Adam M. Hughes (Kurt´s husband) and Kurt High. Beth and I grew up with the High boys and they were our brothers in our hearts. I cannot remember a time when without them. We ran crazy in the neighborhood and were in and out of each others homes all the time. Even after we "grew up" we were still in each others lives. We lost Adam several years ago and lost Richard last month. Couldn´t help but feel a part of my childhood was gone. Thanks to Christine High, Richard´s wife for sharing this picture with me. Love you all!

I met Richard through a mutual friend, Ralph Carbone. They had booths at the Dade County Youth Fair, Richard with Ryder Trucks and Ralph with the University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Burn Center, directly across from each other. Richard, being naturally curious, started a conversation with Ralph that led to Richard becoming a passionate, devoted and enthusiastic volunteer/supporter of the Burn Center for many years!
The Burn Center ran a yearly Burn camp for children surviving burn injuries. Richard was instrumental in obtaining transportation arrangements through Angel Flight Aviation( being an avid pilot himself) to take the kids to camp located in the middle of the state. He was able to enlist Volunteer pilots to fly the private planes! The majority of these kids had never been on a plane before and they were more excited about the flight than the actual camp.
Richard was on the Burn Center Board of Governors and served a year as president. The board was instrumental in fund raising, continuing support of the nursing staff through educational opportunities and travel and many other activities. Richard was a hard worker and focused on accomplishing the goals he set for himself personally and for the entire Board collectively.
Richard was fun, witty, unpredictable, and outgoing. He was passionate about the Burn Center activities, and had a heart especially for the children. He assisted Ralph, myself and others with the Burn Education and Fire Prevention " Snuffy" program at the Dade County Youth Fair, Broward County Youth Fair . This was another of our fundraising events.
Richard was able to join our Burn Team on one of yearly American Burn Association Meeting which is an international multidisciplinary meeting. He participated in the educational programs and kept informed of the difficulties surrounding burn patients and their survival. I remember at the annual banquet that is the official end of the meeting, seeing him on the dance floor with some impressive moves! Alcohol may have been involved, but I can neither confirm or deny this!! HAHAHA!

My dear cousin, Richard. My fondest memories to this day are those times of innocence when we as youngsters would spend time with our aunts and uncles and cousins in Florida. Our only care was to have fun. As an adult Richard always captivated his audience with endless stories that not only intrigued us, but would make us laugh. Aside from the fun, we cherished Richard´s caring nature, as I am sure many can agree. The loss of our parents, our Nanny and Grandad, brother Michael, and cousin Richard, should remind us of how precious time is.

Richard always went out of his way to see that everyone was taken care of, and appreciated. His warm heart and generosity had no end.

So sorry to hear of Richards passing I worked with him for many years in the Auto Rental Industry. Mike Conlon

Remember Richard as the headhunter on the kickoff team at SW. Always displayed "reckless abandon".

Doubled with him to our JR Homecoming in a `64 T-Bird convertible his Dad had repoed for the bank. Thought we were "big time"
