I am in Winnipeg at the 2025 national acute critical events course for the ICU fellows in Canada.

Every year at the course, we award the Hodder cup (a stolen Molson Canadian pint glass) to the local host.

Recent recipients never had the opportunity to meet Rick, but the more senior faculty still remember him and eulogize him every year as part of the award ceremony.

What a wonderful teacher and person he was.

Just heard about Rick's passing. Rick was one of our high school class (1965). In high school he was a leader who showed great promise in many ways. From what I read, he lived up to his wish to make a difference in the lives of others. I just wanted to add my (belated) condolences to his family, who no doubt miss him very much.

Your husband, your father never gave up on me. I was kept alive at the Civic Hospital on life support for 8 days when I was 27 years old due to a lung condition. Today I crossed the finish line in the half marathon with Dr. R. Hodder's name proudly written on the back of my shirt. RIP Dr. Hodder...I haven't forgotten...Lynn Scott

I was looking through some photographs today, saw some of Rick, and was saddened to remember that he is gone. Our families were together in Barcelona two or three years ago. I'm sorry for your loss; I respected Rick highly for his intelligence and sense of humor. Please accept my belated sympathy.

I recently heard about Dr. Hodder's passing and I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Hodder helped me survive my critical illness in ICU in 2000 and I'll never forget his smiling face and words of encouragement. He had a tremendous impact on my life and I hope that you will find comfort in your memories and knowledge that he made an enormous difference in many lives. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My sincere condolences to Rick's family. I went through High School at Agincourt Collegiate with Rick (1960-65) and then went through Honours Physics with him at York University (1965-69). He was excellent academically in all subjects, graduating from grade 13 with 13 "firsts" under the Ontario-wide exams (probably a record). At the same time, he was Agincourt CI's athlete of the year.
He had a great sense of humour and was always fun to be with and easy to talk to. It is no surprise to me that he was loved and appreciated by all those who knew him and came under his medical care.
Rest in peace old friend.

Many, if not most of us, were familiar with Dr. Hodder's works including his book ...."Every Breath I Take: A Guide to Living With COPD." We referred or recommended it often.

We are so very sorry for your family's loss and the added loss to so many of us who are patients.

Rick was my cousin. Rick and Steve Hodder along with their parents Mary and Jack Hodder and my family, the Browns (Aunt Hilda and Uncle Walter) spent the most fabulous fun summers in Muskoka from the time we were small to our late teens. We would waterski all day long. We boated, canoed, sailed, played cards and laughed a great deal all the time. I will always think of Rick and Steve at the cottage and all the great summers we shared. Rick may be gone but the memories are still alive.

We were saddened to hear of the loss of a wonderful man and physician. Our medical community will be poorer due to his loss. While we are getting "long in the tooth" ourselves, we will remember Rick for his amazing teaching skills both for residents and at continuing medical education sessions. Condolences to his friends and family.

I'm so sorry to hear of Rick's passing. Rick's sense of life, sense of humour, and clinical and teaching skill were a model to those around him. He is, and will remain, deeply missed by Ottawa's respiratory community, and by the University of Ottawa.

To Margo and all of Rick's family.
It was my pleasure to not only be a rugby teammate of Rick's, but to play right beside him for so many wonderful years, as the other centre.
We also attended Agincourt CI together.
He was an outstanding athlete, a dedicated student and doctor, and an elite human being with an incredible sense of humour.
He will be missed terribly by all of us who knew him.
My sincere condolences

As a member of the Lung family, I had the opportunity to hear Rick speak many times. His knowledge was always current and reliable. From the publications that I have read, it is evident that he cared deeply for his clients with COPD and wanted to help them be stronger and get more out of their lives. He has truly made a difference in the loves of many people living with COPD.
My heart goes out to his family.

'bye, Rick.
News of your passing is a shock, indeed.
You are remembered as a swift, strong running centre for the Toronto Barbarians Rugby Club, a great person and club member and perennial winner of our annual squash tournament. This loss is too soon.

I will always remember you, Rick. At York you encouraged me to become a teacher. I remember your great Rugby plays too. My love and heart goes out to Margo and children. Affectionately, Nick Mitchell.

I spoke to Dr. Hodder on the phone once or twice while transferring a critical patient, and I was impressed by his knowledge and efficiency. I also appreciated that he travelled regularly to Cornwall, which meant that patients who could not make it to Ottawa were still able to see a respirologist.

I offer my sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Margo, and your family, my sincere condolences on the passing of Rick. What a shock to hear.

My mother worked in the respirology unit at the Civic for a number of years and specifically for Rick at times. I sincerely agree with her in that Rick was truly one of the nicest, warmest person she had the prviledge of knowing and working with.

Always a true gentleman.

Dr Hodder saved my life when I suffered a near death bout of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) twelve years ago. As a result, I have enjoyed twelve years with my wife and three young children. Dr. Hodder was brilliant, but very down to earth. I am so saddened to hear of his passing - he will be greatly missed by all who his life touched. I extend my thoughts and prayers to his family.

Rick Hodder was one of the most amazing people I've ever met - I knew him only briefly, but his compassion and relentless care, especially for my father, Anthony Johansen, was unmatched. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Like my father for me, I hope he becomes even stronger in your hearts.
