North Lawrence - Richard "Dick" Horst, age 97, of North Lawrence, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Amherst Meadows in Massillon, following a period of declining health.

Dick was born on November 29, 1926, in North Lawrence, to the late Ralph and Florence (Huff) Horst, graduated from Massillon Washington High School in 1944, and served as a Seaman Second Class in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Helen M. Wright on July 1, 1949, in Salem, Ohio, and she survives. They would have been married 75 years this July.

He worked as a Supervisor for Ohio Bell Telephone for 38 years, retiring in 1984 and was a member of the Ohio Bell Pioneers.

Dick was a member of the Tuslaw Local Schools Board of Education for 28 years and was a past president of the board; a member of the R.G. Drage Career Center Board of Education, where he was the first Board President and was instrumental in the financing and construction of the school. Dick was a charter member and a past President of the Tuslaw Lions Club; a member of the Tuslaw Booster Club, where for many years he was the "phone man" for the coach's phones in the press box. He enjoyed gospel music, and the family cabin at Piedmont Lake in Belmont/Harrison counties. His favorite hobby was attending activities of all generations of his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

In addition to his wife, Helen, he is survived by daughter, Kathy (Nevin) Nussbaum of Orrville; son, Bob (Dawn) Horst of North Lawrence; four grandchildren, Jenny (Cory) Wilson of Davison, MI, Brent (Sarah) Nussbaum of Falls Church, VA, Cody (Elise) Horst of North Ridgeville and Cara Horst of Cincinnati, seven great grandchildren, Alexis, Ty, Avery and Harper Wilson, Norah and Maddie Nussbaum, Elena Baird, and soon to be Hudson Horst, brother-in-law, Bob (Marge) Boals of Magnolia and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Dr. R. Kenneth Horst, Donald (Marge) Horst and sister, Grace (John) Lawrence.

Friends may call on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Chapel of the Cross Global Methodist Church, 14411 Orrville Street NW, North Lawrence, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm.

Graveside services with military rites will follow at 3:00 pm on Saturday, the 17th, at Newmans Creek Cemetery behind the church, with Pastor Timothy Hull officiating.
