Hurst, Richard M. WATERFORD Richard M. Hurst, 80, of Washington Ave.. died Saturday, September 16, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Richard S. and Anne Barneville Hurst. He was a 1954 graduate of Waterford High School. Dick loved his community and, over the years, had proudly served the people of Waterford as Town Supervisor, Town Councilman, Highway Superintendent and currently as Harbor Master and Town Planning Director. He has served for many years as Town of Waterford Republican Chairman. Dick was retired from the NY Telephone Co. where he worked for 36 years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He owned and operated the former Batto's Liquor Store in Waterford for 15 years. Dick was an Eagle Scout and as an adult he was a Boy Scout Leader. He was a former member of the Waterford Rescue Squad and Knickerbocker Hook and Ladder Co. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford; served as a CYO coach and was past president of St. Mary's School Father's Club. A proud parent, he was very involved in his children's, grand-children's and great-grandchildren's lives. As a licensed captain, "Captain Dick" as he was affectionately known, guided many charter boat tours through the Caribbean with his family and friends. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Joyce Miorin Hurst; and his loving children, Laurie Huneau (Ed) and Lisa McInerney (Paul) of Waterford. He is the brother of the late Karen Donnelly and Sue Smith; and bother-in-law of Peter Donnelly of Saranac Lake. He is the proud grandfather of Jeremy Huneau (Amy), Derek Huneau (Nicole), Jenna Huneau (Derek Bell), Lauren Pells, Gabrielle and Mickellen McInerney and great-grandfather of Ben, Julia and Joey. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rte.32), Waterford, and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Mary of the Assumption Church Restoration Fund or the Waterford Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home office.
