I am an acquaintance of Richard's through the mountain bike community. We'd see each other at events and on the trails from time to time, and Richard always had a smile on his face. Richard still affects me positively when I'm riding on the Seymour trails. His positive energy is still there.
Thanks Richard for showing us how to contribute to others and to our community!

I am having a Rich moment. He was my dear friend in Whistler back in the early 80's. We never dated but I was privy to some lovely moments. I remember so clearly the day he and his team won the snow water earth race, on his birthday..the joy and elation on his face! I joined him during his first cycling races...loved to listen to his guitar and voice and I would attempt harmonies, he sang Cat Stevens so poetically and prophetically. He mailed me his parka when I lived in the Yukon and it saved me during October when it was 45 degrees below! Driving around in his vintage Jaguar was such a thrill. And Mork, well Mork is an angel beside him now...one of the greatest dogs to grace the earth, he had the greatest of friends in Rich too. Years later I was lucky to meet his lovely partner Jill and their babies at a Christmas party they attended at my house. Years slip by...yet the moments passed are still somehow very present. Miss you buddy, your memory continues to encourage everyone you touched with such unique enthusiasm.

Rich and I were very close for over 6 years, from 1978 to 1984. Living together. Skiing and cycling together with other friends, and athletes, at Whistler, and in Vancouver.
Unfortunately it would be another 9 years before I got a chance to return to the West Coast in 1993, and briefly visit my old dear friend to ski together one more time!
I regret not staying in touch, as now that he was taken away from us, I find myself remembering so many amazing, and happy experiences we shared.
I wish I could meet him one more time!
My sincerest condolences to his family, wife, and children at your tragic loss!

Hey Richard!
I miss you every day. I miss your smile every time i went to Tahnee's to come and hang out. You were such a kinda man, no. You ARE such a kind man. Because even thought your not here in body, you are always here in soul and spirit. I just wanted to let you know that you will never be forgotten. Ever. And im taking care of Tahnee so no need to worry. She's turning into such a beautiful young lady you'd be so proud. Jill's doing just fine and Parker is growing up to be a fine young man. I hope the man upstairs of whoevers in charge is taking care of you. I think of you often and will never be forgotten.

Although Rich was not a part of my life in recent years, his enthusiasm for life and great smile will not be forgotten. We shared time in the Hope Rd. house, masters racing, Langley times and my first computer experiences. He is a great example to living life fully and in the present. My best wishes go to you and the kids Jill. Thinking of you and your journey ahead.

Richard's enthusiasm was contagious. I didn't know him for very long, but I always enjoyed seeing him and running into him in random places like Ft. William and Interbike. This is not only a terrible loss personally, but to the entire bike industry.
Jill, it was a pleasure to meet you and the kids during Crankworx Colorado. My deepest sympathies to you all.

My brother, Denis, died in the same kayaking accident as Richard. I didn't know Richard but from what I have heard it sounds like Richard and Denis were kindred spirits. Both filled with an uncanny zest for life, that many of us can only dream of.
Jill, I learned from you, while hiking Grouse Mountain, why you and Richard were life partners...you both live life with such conviction and you don't take one moment for granted. I was inspired after our conversation... like Richard, you emanate such sincerity and passion that you make those around you feel so at ease. Thank you for sharing with me who Richard was and what he meant to your family. I know Denis and Richard are having a blast riding their bikes in unchartered terrain enjoying the limitless boundaries.
"Do not weep for I died, rejoice that I have lived" - Denis and Richard would want it that way!!
On behalf of all of Denis' family, our sincerest condolences to Richard's family and friends.

Dear Jill and Family
Rich will be very missed here in Whistler. We appreciated his dedication and hard work in his quest for mountian biking. We have fond memories of you and him at Masters Ski Races, climbing at the Adventure Zone and just having family chats. We are so sorry for this sudden and tragic void in your family.

To Richard's loved ones: Just having returned from travel, I am only now digesting the news of this tragedy and loss. I knew Richard from my vendor participation at Crankworx. There was a particular warmth and sincerity that radiated from his very being; from his smile. There isn't anyone that knew Richard that won't feel the void. My heart goes out to the community, to his friends and family. May you find some solace in each other.

I just heard of Rich's passing and am shocked and saddened. Its always shocking when someone so full of life is taken from us too soon. I bought my first PC from Rich (a 386 back '85!), he helped us with our race series, skied with him at Masters events and around Whistler and he eventually bought the Whistler condo from us. We'll all miss him and the boundless energy he brought to everything he touched. When the Whistler boys come skiing in Jackson this year we'll dedicate a day of steep and deep to our buddy Rich.

It’s been 2 weeks since Richie's passing. Heading to Taylor’s Crossing to support Jill, Tawnee, and Parker. I haven't seen Rich as much in recent years, we spoke briefly in June with a mutual promise to hook up during the summer. That didn't happen, I wish it had. I will think of Rich often. We skied, we had fun, He was always a good friend.
My thoughts are with Jill, The kids too. If you need anything, just call.

Dear Jill & kids,
our thoughts are with you during this difficult time and we are saddened by this unfortunate accident.
Although my eyes are often a bit teary as I think of Rich, I can't help to smile and even laugh. From the time we ski raced together to the time when I shared my house with Rich in the 80-ties, to recent times of Crankworx, my memories of Rich are full of laughter, strength, tenacity, class and family. Rich has left a lasting impression on me and his memory will stay with me forever.

Dear Jill and Family
I am very saddened by your's and our loss.
Richard and I have battled over the years in many different sports, but the battle was always arm in arm. Whether it was peddling, carving G.S.turns, or dropping in on each other's wave, we spurred each other on. He always had as good a time after the event as during, so save a seat for me at that final big apres party Rich!

Rich I will miss you! I look back at all the great times we had together over the last 30 years ( or more )from the van you roled into Whistler with in the 70's, skiing, racing in Europe, road racing in the 80's (before mtn biking was invented), teaching me how to water start at the gorge(or at least showing which direction to head), friends weddings and so much more. Thanks for reminding me how fun yet precious life is into our 40's and 50's. I wish we had done that last lunch together, wish I had seen you that last time at your 50th but such is lifes lesson. Thanks again Rich. Your spirit will live on in my memories and my thoughts go out to your family.

Our deepest sympathy for the loss of a great person, dedictated father, devoted husband, cummunity leader, world class athlete and true friend. From the early days of sharing a moment on the chairlft, or talking cars at Gas Alley, to invisioning what mountain biking would be like on the shore in 20 years, Richard always was leading the pack, with that big smile of his ever present!!! I am sure he is still leading the pack, up in those big clouds, smiling down on us. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten!!!

Dear Jill, Tawnee, Parker,
Richard was one of the best. From our early days on the CFMI Ski Team when you and him were two of the "Ringers" (see photo), to the later years when we watched from afar, his progression to the top of adventure sports he always managed challenges with enthusiasm and a smile. I hope and know his spirit continues to discover new trails in the Great Beyond.

Having had to break the shocking news to yet more people this morning, I'm again struck by how much everyone Richard met in Scotland liked him and appreciated his enthusiasm and knowledge. In a few short months and 2 visits, he really made his presence and personality felt.
This is such a solemn time, but I aim to remember Richard with a grin, relating stories of Mongolia, his family and his buddies and dancing like crazy with his Scottish forestry and tourism pals at the end of the World Champs. My thoughts are with you, Jill, Tahnee and Parker. Fiona

I spent a bit of quiet time alone at Porteau Cove this morning on my way down to Deep Cove. I have felt restless & unsettled since last Monday when I heard the news. Rich was not a close friend but a good one. we met 30!! years ago on Whistler Mtn.(I think he just skied up to a group of us "locals" with that smile- I don't know if he knew any of us but we were friends before the end of day) and skied together many times in those great days of hiking to the Peak. Rich was so genuine & generous- we would meet accidentially, windsurfing in the gorge or music in Panorama park, crankworx etc & he would be so happy to see me & happy in general, I have a hard time thinking it won't happen again but I feel so much the better for knowing Rich. A life well lived- I've talked to so many people this week who have known him from so many differnt avenues & all admired him.
our deepest condolences to Pam & the rest of the family

Jill, and extended family,
My memories are now treasures of quality time in the mountains,
Watching you and Rich fly through the gates with ease,
Little glimmers of days of powder or groomers,SFU,a CSCF course, Masters and "Chicks" was fun for us all,
Time has allowed us to grow and develop our interests,
Rich at the top of heap in anything he tried!
He is one of the people in my life that was indeed special,
Nothing was too daunting to learn,
An inspiration to get out and live!
I am so happy to remember back over the years,
And ever so grateful you made it here,
Your visit to Aus was precious and super,
We bowled, beached, surfed, and had a little tour around,
Rich loved our round-a-bouts, not stopping for lights,
Just like his life, full speed ahead, the future looks bright!
Our dinners at night with "Bird" as entertainment, were capped off with a chink of glasses to toast the days,
I will be here for you when you come back to Australia for a visit,
And send my love and hugs now,
Tahnee and Parker, you are awesome people and go out and seize the day, just as your Dad would,
Remember the good times, that's what I shall do,
Until we meet again,
Love, June xoxo

Dear Jill,
It was with shock and sorrow that I read about the tragic accident of October 7. I'll always remember Rich and you at the Masters ski races from years gone by and the infectious enthusiasm you both passed on to everyone. No matter what the weather or conditions, Rich was always smiling and that image will remain with me forever. BC has lost two of its premier athletes. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you Jill, and Tahnee and Parker.

I was saddened to hear the news today of Richard's passing and my heartfelt sympathy goes out to all his family and friends. I worked with him many years ago at Reuters in Vancouver. I remember him as being very engergetic, full of life and always smiling. He had great patience with teaching me the ropes as I learned my new job. To Jill and Family,
Rich has always been constant in his kindness and enthusiasm. He was positive and easy to laugh. I spent 12 years riding chairs with Rich and Jill on the CFMI ski team and they were some of the best years on my life. Rich and Jill got together at one of my sister's ski races "Chicks On Sticks" and "Boys On Boards" combined with some Grand Marnia and a night of dancing at Buffalo Bills and the rest was history. One "Chicks " race I dressed as Zsa Zsa Gabor and Rich as a police officer half way down the ski course he pulled me over for speeding and I got to slap (this happened in real life) him and speed on. He was always game for fun. Everyone talks of Rich's smile it almost energized you like having an espresso. Last year Rich and Jill visted my sister in Australia and she said she has never met a couple that seem so happy with each other and really in tune with their kids. I was susuposed to have them for dinner to learn of their trip and put it off. The moral of that story is don't put off what you can do today (Rich would'nt) I so regret not having them and now I won't have the chance. I hope the snow and mountains will heal you Jill there will always be a bit of Rich there. Dale and Family

Jill, Tahnee and Parker words seem inadequate at this time. Since our paths crossed at Cedar Village in the early '90s, you and your children have held a special place in my heart.
Rich was a truly amazing being; in truth your entire family is. Remarkable parents, remarkable children.
I have read people speaking of Rich's ability to inspire, encourage, uplift, motivate, lead, achieve, overcome and envision. I can't agree more with any of those comments. I've often in my own reflective periods thought of Rich and yourself when envisioning a model of positive attributes in a person.
Rich obviously will leave a huge gaping hole in the lives of those he touched. Nothing about Rich was small or ordinary - his passion and zeal for life made him stand out from the others.
We'll miss you Rich, I know wherever you may be, you are embarking on yet another daring adventure with all the grit and enthusiasm possible.
It's comforting to know that someone of his multi-tasking abilities will be watching over you - he is someone truly up to that challenge!
Love each of you, yesterday, today & always ....

Richard,
I am not quite sure when the first time was that I met you. Perhaps it was at a BC Cup Mountain Bike race or another local event, but I will remember you for your warmth and sencerity. Seeing your dedication more recently with both the IMBA conference and Crankworx as well as your words to me about giving back to the sport that had given us so much (namely mountain biking) will always stay with me.
Thanks for being so genuine.

For the many years I have known Rich, he loved life...big smile, big energy...all the time, always eating up the outdoors and good times.

He will always be in my memories. Jill, my deepest sympathies go out to you and your family...

Jill and family. My condolences on your loss.
I had the pleasure of meeting Richard a few years ago when my employer (North Shore Credit Union) helped sponsor the bike festival he was putting together. Richard later took me for my first "off-road" bike ride and encouraged me to try out the "Storm the Shore" adventure race.
His great sense of humour, approachableness and willingness to help will always be remembered.

Wow what a wild promotional ride I've had with your Dad and partner. I met Richard a few years back when I volunteered for the World Mountain Bike Conference and it all took off from that moment.
Richard was the "kick butt" get-it-done guy, while sharing his window view on the battling humming birds he watched daily from the office. Most days our communications was in 20 calls or emails about everything from poster production to organizing yet another meeting.
He was riding, running or paddling, and had already sent 50 emails and back at the home office before I was even up in the morning. The email I always looked forward to was, "Call me when you are available to talk about...".
I will miss him terribly. My little dog Biscuit will miss him too with a weekday operations meeting including his dog Sammie and Dilly the cat, always lying on the desk.
Richard asked me to join the North Shore Mountain Bike Association as a volunteer director, along with a number of mountain biking related activities. He always made me feel that my skills were valuable to him and others. I still ask myself everyday, "What would Richard do?"
Well, no more sadness Richard, I promise to "make it gooder" just as you asked. Enjoy the trails, buddy.

Dear Parker, Tahnee and Jill,
I'm so deeply sorry for our recent loss. I will be out of the country on the 25th so I wanted to share my thoughts…
Richard was a friend of mine, not exceptionally close but we have worked together many times over the years and crossed paths recreating too. We shared similar passions. This has hit me hard; I was terrifically inspired by your father; the inspirational way he lived his life, him as a father and just how amazing he was to work with. I often spoke of your dad to my friends who did not know him; describing how significantly he stood out for me as one great human being who I try to model myself after.
Your dad was a gifted athlete and businessman, always with a meaningful mission in mind. He was so effective at getting things done I was not convinced he even slept at night. As driven as he was in his business and community work I can’t even recall one business interaction where he did not end our conversation with a check in on my family and a playback of our recent time playing in the mountains – even if it was email! He “lived” what is most important in life better than anyone I know.

Dear Parker, Tahnee and Jill,
We cannot express enough sympathy for you and what you are going through. What we do know was that your dad was really special and he touched a lot of lives in a very positive way. In the last week, many old friends from all over North America have called to say how they remebered your dad's smile more than anything and how he lit up the world around him. In the years your dad was out here, he made positive changes that rippled out around him in ski racing, bike racing, adventure sports, family, friends and everywhere he went.
I can see from so many of the notes that are posted that there are a lot of people that are out there and can help you on the path ahead. We are around for the long run for whatever you need.

To The Juryn Family
I was saddend to hear the sudden passing of Richard last weekend and can only imagine the soro felt by all of your family memebers. I first had the pleasure of meeting Richard while taking the Pursuit of Excellence programs back in 1989, which seemed to provide each of us with a real connection to the things we both liked the most "The Outdoors". In 1990 shortly after starting my own business, and learnig that Richard too had just started his, we leaned on each other for support, in fact, Richard sold us our first computers and helped set up our small business systems... as with all computers...there's always problems.... and true to form, he was always there when we needed him... Over the years we bumped into each other, always asking how our family and friends where... wow, what a guy... always so thoughtful and caring of other people....that's just the kind of guy he was.
I always admired his never ending enthusiasm for life and adventure and all that surrounded him. It's not suprising to read over 6 pages of "sympathy expressions" documenting the many contributions Richard had made to his family, friends and community.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Richards service, please accept our deepest condolences.

This news brings tears to my eyes. Even though I have not seen Rich for many years, the memories from Whistler to the Gorge will always stay with me. Dear Jill, Tahnee and Parker,
I was deeply saddened to hear the news about the sudden death of Richard. I wish to express my deepest sympathy at this time of sadness. Richard was a great supporter of mountain biking. He always had a positive and enthusiastic outlook about everything he did. I remember the first time I met Richard I was impressed with his knowledge and love for the outdoors and mountain biking. He was a huge contributor to the North Shore Mountain Bike League and the BC High School Mountain Bike Championship. Richard was the type of person who inspired us as high school coaches and helped in the organization of the high school mountain bike league races. He always was ready to help with anything that needed to be done. I will remember him for being a wonderful family man, his work in environmental sustainability and the organization of Mountain Bike events. He was truly an international figure in the promotion and organization of Mountain Bike events. He will be missed by everyone who had the good fortune to know him.
Jill, Tahnee and Parker my prayers and thoughts are with you.

I met Richard many years ago as a staffer with the Resort Municipality of Whistler. I was introduced to Richard while assisting a collegue with the Summer Gravity Festival. I still remember the air of sincerity and enthusiasm that Richard had toward the events, and indeed toward life itself. His outlook on life was positively infectious and inspirational to those around him.
A few short years later I requested and was given the opportunity to attend an event in my home town of North Vancouver called the North Shore Mountain Bike Festival and Conference. Who knew how truly ground breaking and visionary this pioneering event would be? Richard Juryn, that's who! Richard had both the clarity of vision and the wherewithall to put this event together and make it a success. The event went on to be one of the cornerstone events of the MTB advocacy movement.
Richard will be missed for his lust for life, his positive influence and his concern for those he knew. It has been some time since I last saw Richard (I believe it was at a 'silent' auction and Richard was doing his best to make certain was not so 'silent'!)
My thoughts and condolences go to Richard's wife and kids as well as Richard's larger 'family' - those in the MTB and adventure sport communities.
Sincerely,
Chris Bishop and family

One of the experiences in life to really get to know a person is to go into business together.
Against all sound business practise (which advise I give my clients), Richard and I went into a partnership which at times involved signifcant personal and financial commitments - on the agreement of a handshake!
Through our business esperiences we became close friends and I learned that Richard's passion was his love for the three of you, his soul was to make a difference and his character was integrity.
Like you, I will miss his infectous smile and very personally his exclamation "holy crap Dan"!

I was very sad today to read the news about Richard. I met Richard a few years ago and from the moment I met him he was smiling and was such a nice guy. Although I never really got to know Richard like many of you, every year in Whistler I would see him and he treated me like a close friend. I will miss not being able to see his big smile and positive attitude up in Whistler next year, but I will definitely never forget what a great person Richard was. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

Dear Jill and family,
Like so many others, I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Rich's tragic accident on the weekend. Although I haven't seen much of him in recent years,I have many fond memories of his bright smile and energy at Masters ski races, windsurfing in the Gorge and Hawaii, and of you as a family up dancing at the "Concerts in the Cove". I'm so sorry for your loss. May the outpouring of love and support from friends and family help you through this difficult time.

Dearest Jill, Tahnee, Parker and Sammy
I met the Juryn family because their daughter was in my Girl Guide unit. An email from Jill one day asking for volunteers for one of Richard's many community events and from that point on, my family and I became involved in the wonderful world of Richard.
As so many people have stated Richard lived, played and worked hard. His larger than life attitude brought respect from all. Though Richard may be gone we will continue his passion. To Jill Tahnee, Parker and Sammy take pride in the wonederful husband father and friend you knew for such a short time.
With much Love

Jill and family,
We offer our heartfelt sympathies to you and your family for the loss of a husband and father. Richard will always be remembered in the biking community for his relentless support of all bike sports. Our family had the pleasure of participating in many of Richards events and our fondest memories are seeing him and his family playing in, and enjoying these events as much as all the participants.

We are very saddened by Richard's passing. Knowing him from so many years ago in the Sporting Goods Industry - it is a great loss. Hopefully the pain in your hearts will lessen over time, as you remember all the great things you shared with him, and all the times you laughed together.

I met Richard 5 years ago at an adventure race and had a lengthy conversation with him about our passion for adventure but also the great importance of community, family and loved ones.
I went on to work with Richard in the last two years on community events and he truly walked the walked. He was a man who got things done, brought people together, found time for his own fun and adventure and most of all gave back to his community and loved his family.
He was a mentor and a good, good man.
To honour him is to continue the amazing work he has done for his community and the mountain bike world.

Dear Juryn family
Although I only met Richard for a few days during June '06 at the World MTB Conference in Whistler, the impression he left on me has been lasting. I will cherish the time spent in his 'church' out at Spruce lake forever.

Dear Jill and Family,
I'm so saddened by Richard's passing. Though only casual friends the past few years. Richard went back 25 years when we used to ride together. He always had an incredible zeal for life and he brought out a smile in everybody he met. He was obviously loved by so many people. We will miss him greatly.
My prayers and heart go out to your and your kids.

Dear Jill Tahnee and Parker. My heart is broken. This world has lost an incredible individual, father, husband and friend. Rich has inspired so many with his passion for life & his ability to make every day an adventure. We feel fortunate to have known him, chased him down the ski hill, and most especially for the chance to reconnect and laugh over old funny stories with both of you a few short weeks ago. We have spent this week in disbelief, and offer you our deepest condolences and prayers. We are thinking of you every day and send our love.

Rich, I was suspect of you when we first met...who could be THAT optimistic? Over the years I learned that was your special spark, a spark most of us lack. You've left big shoes for us to fill and you challenge us to step up to the plate and fill them. Thank you for the great times and larger than life effort in all you've done for your community. We won't let you down and your legecy lives on in those you've touched.

I know Rich was friends with everyone, the whole world lit up wherever he went, and he lit up everyone he was with.....and in the 27 years that he has been my friend I don't know that I have ever met a better man. We all have been so blessed by his life, his laughter, his invincible spirit, his endless goodness, generousity and kindness. I know I would not be who I am today if it were not for friendship I had with Rich. He made me a better, happier, freer man. Your husband, your dad, my friend was the best at so many things, but mostly, he was best at being himself and sharing his good nature.

I was new to the North Shore enviroment, having moved down from Prince George to attend school at Capilano College. I decided one day to take out my bike and check out these world famous trails. As I was pedaling up a hill I see a man on the side of the path pumping up his tire. I asked if he needed help and he smiled so brightly and replied, that would be awsome. This was Richard
Richard introduced me into Vancouver Cycling and was so friendly to me. I barely knew of his presence on the trails at the beginning and yet he smiled and talked with me whenever I saw him as though we were friends for ages.
I will always remember him being a bike with a human heart, caring and hard working. I will miss you forever and I send my condolences to his family.

Dear Jill and Family,
Since Monday I have been in shock. I've been through this before and its not easy. I'm trying to smile as I know Richard would want us to, but I feel so sad. Rich was such an amazing guy. I feel blessed to have known him and had the opportunity to work with him. He was an inspiration to us all. We will miss him on the trails and at the events. I'm not sure who we will turn to for that great solution or answer. He was always there and happy to help. We will miss him so much.
As we move forward in life, we will do so knowing Rich is looking over us and guiding us along the way, with that glowing smile.
