Rochester - Our loved one, Dick Klein, passed away peacefully at age 88 on March 18th 2025 at Highland Hospital. He was a true gentleman who exuded love and light... Family gathered from near and far to say their good-byes.
Born in Niagara Falls in 1936 to Madeline (Lehman) and Harold Klein, Dick graduated from Wilson High School and went on to earn a degree in Industrial Engineering at Purdue University. A proud alumnus, he often traveled to Indiana to attend Homecoming weekends.
Upon graduation, Dick worked for Sperry Gyroscope, a division of Sperry Rand installing anti-missile, anti-aircraft and radar on U.S. cruisers for military contractors. He lived on Long Island and commuted to Manhattan by bus and subway. He loved New York City's museums and art galleries and would walk for miles sight-seeing. Ultimately moving to Rochester, Dick worked for 3-M, Housing Systems, Sybron/Pfaudler and C-PAC until he retired.
Dick loved to travel and visited 21 countries around the world on business and on holiday trips.
Very active, he and his wife Sandra entertained family friends at their cottage on Cayuga Lake for years, where the company was rowdy and the fishing divine. He loved to garden and kept his lawns in Brighton and at the lake in meticulous order. In the winters, he just as meticulously shoveled his driveway and sidewalk as neighbors would attest. He would NOT be talked into a snow blower!
He is survived by his wife Sandra Shaben Klein, his beloved sons Harry Klein (David, Mia) and Andrew Klein [Kim, Grace, Lillian), his brother Bob Klein (Shelley, Betsy, Jeffrey), his cousin Linda Klepinger, his stepson Mark D. Shaben, his grandchildren Jack Klein Hazard (Samantha), Cody Shaben (Andrea, Theo, Sadie and Henry Richard) Erin Shaben and "daughter "Kris Redding (Dave, Kiana, Trevor). He is also survived by his brothers-in -law John Fredenburg, Ross Fredenburg and Steve Geery and sisters-in-law Lynne Fredenburg and Cindy Geery, nephews John Freeman Fredenburg (Ciara), Ross Allen Fredenburg (Ellie, Lexie), Tyler Geery (Katie, Addie, Emmett), nieces Britt Emanuel (Mark, Nathan, Evan, Emily), Caitlin Fredenburg (Jonathan Edelman, Felix, Wolfgang, Axel, Saskia), Lindsy Lavoie (Josh).
Richard was predeceased by his beloved sister-in-law Karen Fredenburg and stepson Michael Shaben.
Heartfelt thanks to our family, friends and neighbors, to Dick's doctors Lawrence Samkoff and Anthony Solazzo, his trainer Jen Schlegel and his physical therapist Meredith Mark, and to the kind staff at Highland Hospital for their compassionate care, love and support of Richard throughout his journey from beginning to end.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dick's life and share memories of him on Saturday April 26th at the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, 220 Winton South, in the Susan B. Anthony Room at 12 o'clock. A reception will immediately follow from 1 to 3 at the church.
Donations may be made in Dick's memory to Coach Jen at Rock Steady Boxing Flower City, 23 Saxony Road, Pittsford, N.Y. 14534 or to a
