Richard Earl Loeding, 89, passed away on May 15, 2025, in
Rochester, Michigan. Born on May 9, 1936, in Pontiac, Michigan, Richard lived a life marked by dedication to his family, an unwavering commitment to excellence in his career, and a deep appreciation for the joys of leisure and sport.
Richard graduated from Birmingham High School before pursuing higher education at General Motors Institute (GMI), where he earned a degree in Manufacturing Engineering. His thirst for knowledge and professional growth led him to obtain a Master's degree from the University of Detroit. He further enriched his expertise by completing the Executive Program at Carnegie Mellon University, the Stanford Executive Program, and the Harvard Marketing Course-an impressive academic journey that reflected his drive and intellectual curiosity.
In 1960, Richard began his distinguished career with General Motors at GM Truck and Coach. Starting in various supervisory roles within the plants, he quickly rose through the ranks due to his leadership and strategic insight. He was promoted to Manager of Material Control and later served as Director of Production Control through 1974. In 1975, he transitioned to GM Corporate in Detroit to lead a section of Production Materials Purchasing. That same year, he became Director of Purchasing for Cadillac Motor Car Division.
Richard's career continued its upward trajectory when he was appointed Director of Production Control, Purchasing and Logistics for Packard Electric Division in Warren, Ohio in 1979. In 1982, he returned to Detroit as Director of Materials Management and Supplier Quality for Detroit Diesel Allison Division. His final role before retirement was as Director of Materials Management and Quality Assurance at Saginaw Division in Saginaw, Michigan-a position he held until retiring from General Motors in 1993 after more than three decades of dedicated service.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard was a devoted family man. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Sandra, with whom he shared 62 cherished years. He is survived by his sons R. Scott Loeding (Carol) of Romeo, Michigan, and Erik M. Loeding of Austin, Texas. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Cameron, Caitlin, Graham, Cecilia, and Miles Loeding.
Richard found great joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved watching football and had a lifelong passion for golf-both playing and watching the game. His love for the water was evident in his enjoyment of boating, fishing, and Torch Lake waterskiing-activities that brought him peace and happiness throughout his life.
A loving husband and a pillar of strength and support for his friends and family, Richard will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him from Birmingham to Traverse City, MI and down to Estero, Florida.
A private memorial will be held this summer. We love you and miss you and will always continue to make you proud.
