To Patricia and the boys...I still think about Rick a lot, and was so lucky to have been able to work for him and have him as a professor. He was one of Edward's greatest assets.

It's hard to believe that it has been nearly six months since Rick's funeral. I was his research assistant from 2000-2001, and continued to keep in touch with him and his family throughout the years. Rick was an honest soul and a great friend, and I miss him deeply. He was an enthusiastic, caring professor. I know that he would have put on one of his wonderful Halloween costumes for the students last week, something that he loved doing. Rest in peace, Rick.

Rick Long was one of life's great rarities - an outstanding scholar and academic mentor; a generous friend and confidant; a devoted and loving family man; a seasoned traveller and fabulous ranconteur. He will be remembered forever with admiration and affection by his many friends around the world who had the privilege of knowing him and working with him. Our deepest sympathies to Patricia and family and to his colleagues at UofS. John and Catherine Shields, Sydney, Australia.

To Rick's wife and children, I am so sorry for your loss. Rick was an inspiration to all of us. I took his compensation class last September and learned so much from him. Rick brought an energy to class that made learning exciting. He was interested in all of his students and you could tell he truly wanted everyone to succeed.
During office hours before the final exam, Rick showed me the published book detailing his travels across the TransCanada Trail. I remember how excited he was as he described his experiences. I am so glad he had the opportunity to undertake this great adventure. May he forever rest in peace.

Professor Long was by far one of my favorite professors throughout my university career. When I told him I was a management major, he said to me "and you chose to take this? poor dear", little did he know it would become my favorite class. He was there to help his students learn, and to crack a joke in moments of frustration during that awful compensation project (like the time my group achieved the centrefold of market pay liness for Compensation Weekly). Rest in Peace Professor Long!

Rick was such a great professor. He truly cared about each student's success and growth in his class. He took the one class no one really wanted to take but had to and made each of us truly enjoy the experience. Rest in peace Rick, you'll live on in every HR practitioner you sent into the world.

After he was my professor, he and I continued to stay in contact. He always seemed genuinely interested in how I continued to grow as a person. That's a special quality that turns a professor into a friend. I'm sorry to hear Rick wont be around to enrich the lives of more students, they way he enriched mine.

Everything I know about compensation is because of Professor Long. I owe him my success as an HR Consultant and my teaching career as a Sessional Lecturer. He was a tremendous mentor and role model. I will miss him.

I am sad to hear of the passing of Rick. He was my favourite professor. I was a marketing major, but took one of his compensation classes. He always checked in with me over the years to see how I was doing (even just a few months ago). Such a special man. Prayers are with his family.

Patricia and the boys, I'm so sorry for your loss. Rick was an amazing colleague. We would share stories of our travels; Rick excited about his summer hikes and me about my Camino hike. He was extraordinarily well respected among his colleagues across Canada, with folks 'circling' him at ASAC conferences where I first met him. He was a truly good person, genuine and generous, and so proud of his family. A shining light. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I had the pleasure of knowing Rick during the last 9+ years here at Edwards. His passion for his field, colleagues and students was always evident as was his passion for adventure and travel. I will especially miss his Zorro and Jack Sparrow costumes; our discussions about cruising and hiking; and his special seat in the lunch room!
