Richard MacInnes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 1 to Mar. 5, 2011.
MacINNES, Richard Bedford Richard Bedford MacInnes, ""Richie"" was born on August 25, 1930 in Calgary, Alberta and passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while visiting relatives in Victoria, B.C. on February 22, 2011. Richard was a longstanding second generation Calgarian with a strong sense of family, tradition and history. Richard is survived by his loving and adoring wife of over thirty years, Cathie, his brother Hugh McInnes and father to four wonderful children, Terrill MacInnes, Rani MacInnes-Cann (Ron), Kevin MacInnes (Denise), Kirby MacInnes (Brian) and five beautiful grandchildren, Kira, Malcolm, Samara, Maxime and Luka. Beyond family, Richard maintained and truly valued a very wide circle of long-time friends from all walks of life. Richard graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1959 and embarked on a colorful variety of careers in business management and public relations. He loved the coast and made the most of his years there always pining to go back and breathe in the ocean air which made his passing on the coast even more poignant. Throughout his life Richard was dedicated to adventure, fitness and generally celebrating life with friends and family. It was in that vein that Richard, along with several longstanding friends and colleagues, founded and built his family cottage within the Glenwood Beach Community at beautiful Shuswap Lake. Richard's most fond pleasure and memories emanated from his time spent at the cabin with many friends and family over the years. He would swim in the lake from the first blush of the sunrise to the brilliant last kiss of the blazing sunset well into the autumn months. Richard also took great pride and garnered significant respect and notoriety as a volunteer director for the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede culminating in an appointment as Honorary Life Director, a position with longstanding tradition and pride for the City he loved. Richard was a fun loving man's man with a great sense of humor, flawless memory for friends and acquaintances, love for prose, all things Scottish and a member of the Southern Alberta Pioneers Association. With great pride Richard repatriated the MacInnes family brand covering most of the horse and cattle and in addition, with an eye into his family roots, Richard most recently began a process for raising funds to have his Grandfather's meat market restored to historical significance in Fort Steele. Richard had a tremendous ability to make any in his presence feel like they were the most important person in the room. At Richard's request there will be no Funeral Service or formal Memorial held; his wishes were for all those important to him to celebrate his life by spending time with your family and friends. Cremation has taken place. Flowers are gratefully declined and those wishing to make donations in Richard's honour can do so to the Calgary Stampede Foundation (Box 1060 Station M, Calgary, Alberta T2P 2K8), Southern Alberta Pioneers Association (3625 - 4 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2S 1Y3) or the Western Canada High School Alumni Association (641 - 17 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2S 0B5). Blessings and kind gentle prayers for your entire family in these days and coming weeks in the aftermath of Richie's passing. He is and was a bright light.
I always looked forward to his giddy jokes and laughter at the lake,...I still remember him playing tag on the highway when we on our way home from the lake back to Calgary.
Richie I imagine you now lightly zipping around the clouds in your VW beetle in the sky. Blessings to you. ~*~

The Family Of Richard :
We were shocked to learn of Richards passing, and pass along our sincere condolences to all of you.
I was General Manager of The Stampede from 1980 to 1992 and during Richards term as a Director we saw each other often and always enjoyed each others company. He was a very nice man.
We hope the many good memories you have of times you spent together, help you through this difficult time.

God Bless all of you

First you taught me how to really laugh and then how to swim my friend. Did you ever know how many of us always tried to get you to laugh, just because your laugh was the absolute best tonic to make us all feel good. Goodbye Rich.
