Richard McGinnis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 25 to Jul. 27, 2023.
Signal Mountain - Richard Allen McGinnis passed away on July 24, 2023 from complications of multiple myeloma at his home in Alexion Village. He was born August 24, 1945 and graduated from Notre Dame High School. He continued his education at the University of Virginia, University of Tennessee, and Georgia State University. After emerging with an MBA Degree, he, subsequently, earned many recognitions and professional certifications with the first being a certified pension actuary and the final one being an enrolled actuary with the IRS. He was, thus, able to advise his client base on retirement planning, funding and investment management, distributions, and taxation.

He was a member of several professional, social, and fraternal organizations and enjoyed a wide range of interests at one time or another, such as: hunting, fishing, golf, canoeing, and marathoning.

Richard was pre-deceased by his parents, Robert A. and Margaret P. McGinnis and his in-laws Herman and Etta P. Brock. By far the highlight of his life was his nearly fifty years of marriage to Gail Ann Brock McGinnis, who pre-deceased him in 2021. Richard and Gail enjoyed many road trips together including Charleston, Savannah, High Hamptons, Florida, and Gatlinburg in the Great Smoky Mountains. Unfortunately, their final journeys involved cancer treatments at Tennessee Oncology, after a first diagnosis for them both, occurring only one week apart.

Richard is, additionally, survived by numerous cousins who are spread across the country. Assisting with his and Gail's special healthcare needs over the years was their cousin, Phyllis Hillis of Oak Ridge, TN. Richard and Gail had a special godchild, Elizabeth Goodwin Johnson. He had numerous lifelong friends from Lookout Mountain and in classes at Notre Dame High School, including Foster Goodwin, Paul Standifer, Paul Sharp and Sanford Dickinson, as well as, newer friends at Alexion being Greta Roux, Sandy Gibb and his neighbors Nancy Ellis, Mary Ann and Bob Weems and Ingrid Boettcher. A memorial mass will be held at the St. Augustine Chapel of Alexion Village on Signal Mountain on Friday, July 28 at 11:15 with a reception to follow. There will be a private family interment, next to Gail Ann, in her family plot at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

It's hard to believe that it's been a year since Mr. McGinnis passed. He would be proud to see that my son has kept his prized GMC Yukon in great condition and is still enjoying it. Everytime I ride in it, I think about Richard and what a unique and wonderful human being he was!

Richard was the kindest nicest
Man I have ever known. He
Brightened each day for me.
He was so intelligent funny
Athletic and yet so humble.
I hope to be as kind a person
As he was.
I will never forget him. I believe
God sent him here to inspire
All of us to be better people.

Our family will certainly miss Richard. For many years, he was our "tax guy" and we developed a friendship from that. I always joked that I wanted him to sell me his mint condition GMC Yukon, and as fate would have it, he wound up selling it to my son as his first car with very generous payment terms. My son was so proud to make that final payment and loves the vehicle. I´ll always remember Richard every time I see it. My condolences to his family. He was a wonderful man!

We join Richard´s Alexian family- and for Barbara, his former Lookout Mt. neighbors- in mourning the loss of this caring, compassionate and lovely man. He made many friends and contributions of service to our community during his time here and we will miss him being among us. Fondly, Lynn Hodge and Barbara Seals
