Richard Naylor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2018.
Richard H. Naylor

York - Richard "Dick" Harvey Naylor entered into eternal rest on December 10, 2018 at 90 years young.

Dick was born on June 8, 1928 in York, Pennsylvania. Shortly after graduating from Glen Burnie High School, he met the love of his life, Audrey. They were married on June 2, 1950. In 1969, Dick and Audrey purchased a potato farm in Stewartstown and starting making plans for a vineyard. Together, they traveled the world visiting wineries and talking to winemakers about how they operate and which grapes to plant. They started planting grapes in 1975 and officially opened Naylor Wine Cellars in 1978.

Mr. Naylor has been recognized as a pioneer in the wine industry. He was influential in bringing the Chambourcin grape to America, Director of Wine America, President of the Pennsylvania Wine Association, President of the American Wine Society First Capital Chapter, member of the Society of Wine Educators, member of the South Eastern Grape Growers of Pennsylvania, and he also taught classes at Penn State about winemaking for 10 years. In 2013, the American Wine Society presented him with the Award of Merit, their highest honor for a lifetime of achievements in the wine industry. He was also instrumental in helping other vineyards get started and was always willing to help in any way he could. He was an open book of information and spread his knowledge generously. He believed the wine industry was a community, not a competition. With his packaging background, he founded Wine Packaging by Naylor and created and patented the Ultimate Wine Cradle™. He was a champion for big bands, his favorite genre of music, and kept it alive at his Summer Sounds concerts. He was the smiling face that greeted you as you walked into the winery tasting room and could be found serenading customers with "Danny Boy" and "Moon River".

Dick was a 50 year member of the Red Lion Lodge #649 F&AM, 50 year member of the Harrisburg Consistory, member of the Zembo Temple and member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon, York Forest #30. He was also a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Mr. Naylor is preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Naylor; his mother, Helen Ida (Boose) Wheat and his father, Harvey Pierce Naylor. He is survived by his brother, Franklin Wheat (Arlene) of Delray Beach, Florida; sister, Janey Andrews (Clyde) of Frederick, Maryland; three daughters, Janey Potter (Edward) of York, Kathy Myers (Greg) of Coopersburg, and Lori Klinedinst (Steven) of York as well as 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

A masonic service conducted by his lodge will be held Monday, December 17, 2018 at 9:45 a.m. in the Nelda Jackson room at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 397 Tyler Run Road, York with a visitation held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the church with his pastor, the Rev. Richard Smith, officiating. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Children's Home, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.

Arrangements by the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St. York, PA 17403.

Every time I read an article, or something interesting about the different species of unique grapes cultivated in the NE Eastern USA such as chamborcin, bacon noir, seval blanc, etc., I think of Dick Naylor and how patient he was with anyone that was interested in learning about these unique varietals.
RIP Richard.

My Deepest Sympathies to Dick's family..
As a professional wine educator, distributor & member of the Society of Wine Educators, Dick was certainly for me personally, one of the most influential, friendliest, knowledgeable, and magnanimous individuals, I've ever been acquainted with in all my 37 years in the wine trade. He was always willing, in his amiable, convivial way to spend extra time answering questions, addressing comments from interested people, students at conferences, wine events & in his vineyards. I learned much from him. Sincerely, Jonathan Galin, CWE, CSW

Brenda & I knew Audrey & Dick since the 1960's
when I worked with Audrey in the Engineering Department at Dentist Supply. In the 1970's I was hired by Dick as a sales representative at Cor-Box when he was Genera Manager. Both Audrey & he were wonderful people and both are greatly missed.

I got to know Dick through his Masonic activities and in particular his participation in the Scottish Rite in Harrisburg. We acted together in a colonial drama about the life of Benjamin Franklin, and he was delightful to work with. I played a very young Ben and he was the skeptical member of a committee "investigating" Ben's suitability for membership in the Masonic fraternity. It was great fun, until the curtain went up, and then he was a pro delivering his lines with conviction. Several times, I thought I/Ben would never get his approval! I will always have fond memories of this good Brother Mason.
