Dick Pope was both a friend and mentor. He and Susan took my wife Kathryn And I in when we first arrived in Regina in 1996 as she was to take up a new appointment at the University of Regina, she having just finished her PhD. Dick, as was his way, took an interest in me and soon introduced me to persons among his very large network of friends and acquaintances who shared my interest in environmental affairs. When they decided to move we discussed his and Susan's plans for their new home, and he took pains to allow me to use his summer place at Tyvan when I passed through town. We discussed many topics over those years and he always led me to deeper understanding though those discussions. I will miss him...

I was a student of Dr. Pope's at the U of R from 1989 to 1993. His approach to Anthropology and to life were inspirations for me to go on to pursue further studies in this field. The biggest revelation was my first class with him, when I learned that people were NOT all the same and that the differences were there - and each difference was valuable and important. Dr. Pope literally changed my view of the world and there are very few people who do that in one's life. He was a great teacher and a wonderful man and the world - and my life - was much richer for having him in it.
