Mr Richard "Dick" Pratt

Richard Pratt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 23 to May 3, 2009.
RICHARD Pratt has led life in the thick of the action.

The business mogul and poor Polish migrant made good, was also a one-time boxer, would-be Hollywood actor, accomplished footballer and Carlton president, arts administrator, university director and philanthropist.

Dick Pratt’s personal fortune nudges $5.5 billion and his corporate empire spans the globe, employing more than 9000 people.

He was recently named Australia's fourth-richest man and one of the nation’s greatest philanthropists and arts patrons, donating $10 million a year to causes.

Married to arts dynamo Jeanne Pratt, who also has a lengthy resume involving arts and charity works, Mr Pratt was made a Companion (AC) of the Order of Australia for his contributions to industry, sport and the arts.

But he handed it back in February last year back after admitting price fixing with rival Amcor which led to a $36 million fine.

It was not the first time the high-profile businessman’s activities attracted both adulation and trouble as he made major plays in the corporate and sporting world.

In the '90s, Mr Pratt was pursued by the NCA – which raided his offices in 1993 over business dealings with John Elliott in the ‘80s, which also examined the aborted takeover of BHP.

And in 1990, in the middle of the last recession, Pratt almost lost everything amid the failed sale of the Occidental and Regal insurance businesses by Pratt’s Battery Group.

His communty standing also took a beating in 2000, amid revelations that Mr Pratt kept Shari-Lea Hitchcock as a long-term mistress in Sydney, with their union producing a daughter, Paula, in 1997.

Mr Pratt said the headlines had been painful, particularly for his young daughter.

"I thought it (the media coverage) was very unfair because I didn't think it was anyone's business except for my family, the young girl and her mother," Mr Pratt said in 2007.

But despite the troubles, Mr Pratt told the Herald Sun in 2004 that he always started the day on a positive note.

“Every morning I wake up optimistic. I may go to bed feeling pessimistic, but I wake up optimistic.''

In Melbourne, he is well known as the former president of the Carlton Football Club, a post he held in 2007-2008, before standing down amid charges he misled the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

He was born Ryszard Przecicki in Gdansk, Poland on December 10, 1934, to parents Leon and Paula.

His grandfather was a schoolteacher, and his father was a retailer selling bicycles, white goods and record players.

As World War II raged around them, the Jewish family sought refuge in Australia in 1938 from the Nazi threat, an experience that has seen Mr Pratt become a stout defender of the Australian ethos.

The family first settled in Shepparton where Pratt senior bought an orchard, and Richard went to Grahamvale State School and Shepparton High.

In 1945, Richard’s parents began what was to become the Visy empire with a 1000 pound investment from Ida Visboard.

The Visy Board’s first cardboard box machine made 5000 boxes a day. Richard joined in 1952, working in sales and marketing.

By the time Richard Pratt took over the business in 1969 at the death of his father, the company had a $5 million a year turnover.

Under his stewardship, the company expanded from a single factory to plants across the country, New Zealand, Thailand and the US.

Along the way he became known as the “cardboard king”, dominating Australia’s recycled cardboard packaging industry for decades.

Pratt’s involvement with arguably Australia’s biggest crisis – the lack of water – has also been instrumental in seeking solutions to the big dry.

He has argued many times in recent years that water is Australia's key commodity for the future, and should be more expensive.

In 1994 he was also recognised for his “magnificent contribution to recycling” by the Banksia Environmental Foundation, and was named Environmental Visionary of the Year in 1998 by the Keep Australia Beautiful Campaign.

But Mr Pratt’s interests have not been confined to business.

Pratt public service has ranged from being the foundation chancellor of Swinburne University of Technology, the president of the Victorian Arts Centre Trust and Chairman of the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria.

The Pratt Foundation also donates an estimated $10 million-a-year to charitable activties.

At Melbourne University, Mr Pratt acted, and in 1956 left his studies to perform Johnnie Dowd in Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll in its London and New York seasoins.

Pratt was invited by Burt Lancaster to screen-test for the Hollywood film but declined, opting to return home to the family business.

He was also a useful performer on the field, playing Aussie Rules with Carlton’s seconds – including winning the Morrish medal for best and fairest in 1953.

As an amateur boxer he was less well known, except for an infamous stoush when he broke the nose of ex-Carlton coach and champ Percy Jones.

His boxing interest saw him bring champion Muhammad Ali to Australia in 2000.

He also made a failed bid in 1983 to snatch yachting glory and the America’s Cup, largely financing the Challenge 12 syndicate, which played a crucial role in the success of Alan Bond’s Australia II.

Mr Pratt also stood ready in 1985 to take over the Sydney Swans.

Cramming much into his life, Mr Pratt’s capacity for work has been the stuff of legend, with the mogul starting work by 5.30am every day.

His schedule has often consisted of working 16-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, snatching 20-minute naps along the way.

What pushed him so hard to achieve was not clear, although he never lost the hardworking country ethos he picked up around Shepparton.

“It’s certainly not the necessities of life. But there is some force which pushes me along.”

In an interview four years ago, he told the Herald Sun, he had not missed a day at work “for a very long time”.

“But then, I don't go to work to earn a living. I go because it is exciting and fun, and it satisfies my yearning to be busy all the time.''

At the time, Mr Pratt said he would never retire.

His boundless energy has also seen the Pratt throw spectacular parties, with hundreds coming to his 60th birthday, opera events and the weddings for his children at the family mansion Raheen.

At some of the grand parties, Dick Pratt was known to sing and dance. His favourite song? If I Were a Rich Man.

All the while, Mr Pratt has never lost confidence in his abilities, saying if he had started from scratch he would still have succeeded.

“Well, they say that if you took all the money off the rich people and threw it up in the air, they would finish up with it again,'' he said.

In another interview he repeated a similar sentiment: “If someone knocked down my little ant hill, I would start building another”.

Mr Pratt leaves three children Anthony, Heloise and Fiona.

After going through and reading most of the beautiful words that have been written about "Dick" It feels like we have all known him and he has impacted all of our lives in some way. Many people always asked if i was related to Richard and whilst many would wish they were for the money, i can honestly say i would of loved to just for all of his work he has done for Australia. Thoughts are with all family and friends, also to the many who looked at him as their saviour - not just Carlton supporters but Visy workers, The Pratt foundation receipents and rural victoria ect.

Thank you for everything

Condolences to Jeanne & the Pratt Family.
Goals, problems, challenges & achievements...To use a verse from Frank Sinatra's song.....because I think Richard did it his way.
And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain I've lived a life that's full I travelled each and every highway
And more, much more than this I did it my way.
Regrets I've had a few.
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption.
I've lived a life that's full
I travelled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Well Done Richard, we'll all miss you.

PRATT - Richard
A truely "GREAT" Australian! A truely "GREAT" Man!
Being a true "BLUES" Supporter, I have followed as much as I can when it comes to Richard Pratt. A man that needs to be thanked by every Carlton Supporter for the rescue of the Football Club we, and he loved so much. Most Carlton Supporters would only know and appreciate what Richard Pratt has done for the Carlton Football Club. But trying to follow as much of Richard Pratt as I possibly could, he needs to be thanked for so much more! His support to Carlton, his support to the AFL, his support and generousity to Charities, his support to employing Australians and Australia, and the list goes on and on and on....
Richard Pratt, you or your Family wouldn't know me, but you were my hero, my mentor. I could only wish to one-day, be a "GREAT" PERSON LIKE YOU WERE!

To the Family of Dick Pratt.

My deepest wishes for the Pratt Family in particular Jeanne and their children in this time of sorrow, and also in celebrating of a human life “fully lived”. Whilst I have never met Dick personally we crossed paths at different functions and events. All that I heard and learned about the man has inspired me in many ways through some difficult business situations and indeed personal issues, for that I thank him.

Moreover, I am deeply grateful as a lifelong Carlton supporter to know he loved the Old Navy Blues so much, and that the fruits of his love and labour are starting to ripen and show a juicy horizon ahead. It would of been very satisfying to him last Sunday when watching is beloved Blues to see the strong crushing performance against the premiership fancied Western Bulldogs. He would have passed away in the knowledge that the club he loved and possibly saved may one day soon win their 16th Flag.

My father was a migrant much like Dick (albeit nowhere near as financially successful) but very committed to affecting people’s lives ina positive fashion through his own love and bounds of endless support, hence my healthy deep appreciation for the sacifices, efforts and achievements of all migrants that reached these faraway shores.

Again I trust his peerless legacy, unrelenting good work in all spheres of society, which has demonstrably improved everyone he touched from community organisations, families he lifted, people he employed and generally anyone he breathed goodwill into through his life, take a leaf from his profound character and pass that special gift bestowed by Dick onto others like a sweeping wave of genuine heartfelt support onto all.

May he Rest In Peace.

Dick Pratt was a great Australian success story, coming from nothing to become one of our wealthiest and most notable personalities. y heart goes out to the family of Richard Pratt. I did not know him personally, but i was touched by his generosity & kindness through The Pratt Foundation. After seeing an article in The Herald Sun about myself and my daughter Shayla, who has special needs, The Pratt Foundation contacted me, to offer me some respite, and sent me away for five days to be pampered and have some rejuvenation at Peppers in Hepburn Springs. I came back with more energy, and faith in the kindness of strangers.

The Amram family will never forget the generosity of Richard Pratt:
When Raphi Amram was terminally ill – Richard offered to fly him to Australia for treatment: an act of friendship! Raphi never came - but the generosity struck us all.
Raphi was telling us about Richard: curious, intelligent, generous Australian giant, who is looking, unafraid, to be challenged by anyone who can find new, innovative ideas to make human life better- and willing to support those ideas.
We are with Jeanne, the family and with the Pratt Foundation in this difficult time.

I did not know Richard Pratt personally except through community goodwill generated over many years. Richard Pratt created thousands of long term jobs in recycling which was worth 1000 times more than the Pratt Foundation gave away every year. He was an inspiration to many people and be sadly missed by all. Condolences to Jeannie Pratt and family. Gilbert BOFFA of Camberwell

Dick, thank you so much for taking me under your wing and showing me the ropes when i had no experience what so ever. I know you did this in light of much criticism and for this i will be eternally grateful. I now have the experience necessary to take on anything or anyone in the world, thank you. RIP

I have friends who have worked for Visy Board in Dandenong under Richard,I have friends who are in diferent Unions who have dealt with Richard,I also have friends who knew Richard personaly,They all say the same things about him, that Richard was a man born a to be leader in all facets of life, he was extremely humble in his quest,he was verry generous and expected nothing less then perfection from those he employed and he dealt with, therefore inspiring others to become leaders and to bring out the best in themselves...what a truly wonderful human being..You will be sadly missed.

You saved our Mighty Blues, you gave employment to many and you were a generous charity man. I am sure there are many more good things you have done for people we will never know about. Make sure you look down on the Blues and make us win the flag!!!!!

Richard, You will be remembered for your generosity, for being an entrepreneurial recycler and the saviour of the Carlton Football Club. We will remember you every time the cup is held aloft by a Carlton captain.

ALL great things come to an end. We remember the five greatest ever Carlton players as defined by their selection in the AFL Team-of-the-Century: John Nicholls, Alex Jesaulenko, Bruce Doull, Greg Williams, and Stephen Silvagni. We remember the joys they gave us when they ruled the green turf, and we remember the emotions they aroused when the door closed for the last time. Then we can move on to the corporate world where you set an example of the epitome of success in business, by becoming only one of a handful of Australian billionaires. Then, we remember when this mighty football club - Carlton - was sitting at the top of the mantle with a equal record of 17 premierships to boot; then we remember when this club was brought to its knees and seemingly destined for financial ruin; and we remember how you humbled yourself to accept an invitation to exert your well-known generosity to pull this club of greatness out of its quagmire to put this club back where it belongs. As with all champions of all walks of life, another door has once again closed for the last time. Mr Pratt, we thank you, and we will remember you. R.I.P.

Dick,
You brought hope, joy and belief back to the hearts of tens of thousands of blues. Now... 'they know we're coming...' but it was you who led them out of the wilderness! Thank you, Dick. May you Rest In Peace.

I am a St.kilda supporter and am not the biggest fan of the blues however what Richard did for carlton, to save them from where they were, is exceptional and something that is respected by the A.F.L community as a whole.
