Richard Ramsey Obituary
Richard Lee Ramsey Sr., aka Doc Ramsey, the son of Sumler Ramsey, Sr. and Lucy Mae Smith, both deceased, was born on August 17, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio. He departed this life on December 28, 2017 of natural causes, at VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia at the age of 86.
Preceding him in death were his son, Corey Aaron Ramsey; daughter, Vanessa Turner; stepmother, Doris Ramsey; brothers, Harold and Roy Roger Ramsey, James Ramsey, Sr.; sisters, Doretha Clarke-Goree, Rose Thomas, Delores Wilson; stepsister, Lucille Turner and ex-wife and friend, Elaine Johnson.Richard, aka Doc Ramsey and Ram, attended school in Toledo, Ohio, and joined the Army in 1948 at the young age of 17. He was a decorated career war veteran who served in Japan; the Korean Conflict; Occupation of Germany; Berlin Airlift; France; the Vietnam War; Just Cause Panama; Granada; Desert Storm; and Desert Shield. He received a Purple Heart each for service in Korea and Vietnam and was a prisoner of war. He served as a pharmacy medic in the Army and retired after 25 years of service. Richard settled down in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania and continued as an Army pharmacy medic as a civilian. He was a General in the Antler Guard Elks of the World and a lifetime member of the American Legion in Waynesboro.In earlier years Richard coached young folks in basketball, baseball and football. He was a lightweight boxer and excelled in track and field. Richard was very generous and supported every charity cause that came his way.Richard leaves to cherish loving memories: wife, Delores; sons, Richard, Jr. (Rachelle) and Harold Harry; sisters, Beverly June Ramsey-Levert, Cleveland, Ohio and Harriet Ramsey-Hamilton, Colorado Springs, Colorado; brothers, Yolando Ramsey and Sumler Ramsey, Jr., Toledo, Ohio and Garfield Ramsey, Monrovia, CA; grandchildren, Latasha (Chris) of Duluth, Georgia, Sheree (Brian), Richard III (Katrina) and Janelle Ramsey; eight great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, caregivers and friends.Visitation and Interment January 12, 2018 1:00 p.m. Dale-Riggs Funeral Home, 572 Nebraska Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43604. Burial in historic Woodlawn Cemetery, 1502 W. Central Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43626.
