It does not seem possible that it has been 15 years. You are remembered at UK as one of the greatest doctors, ever. For those of us still here at UK, we were lucky to have you in our life. Much love to your family Dr. Schwartz. We still miss you.

My prayers and thoughts are with the Schwartz family. At DePauw he was always so full of energy, drive, and humor. Can still see him on the handball court. I can only imagine what joy he brought your family.

Dear Family, I worked at the General Surgery clinic for a few years and had the pleasure to meet and work for Dr. Schwartz. He was a great person to work with. He was funny, and caring. I was heart broken to hear of his passing and just wanted to send you this message that he touched even the smallest of people who knew and worked with him. Hope your days are well and full of great memories.

Rich was our neighbor on Cahaba Road in Lexington when he was a high school student. I recall playing football and basketball with him many times. Sorry to hear of his passing. Condolences to the family.

Janet-- I was stunned by the news about Rich that I received in reply to a routine email I sent him yesterday about my parents' health. I always depended on him for medical advice about my father after he fixed his hernia. In fact, I last saw Rich while my father underwent another surgery at UK last year. Rich was a friend that I could pick up with, even after a long hiatus. I will always remember that weekend in Orlando when you two visited and he gave grand rounds. He will be greatly missed as a friend and a fellow surgical educator.

Janet,
You, Sarah, and Andrew and the St Luke church family have been in my thoughts and prayers over these last weeks as I learned of Richard's illness and death. I cannot imagine the loss you have experienced. I join, however, with countless others in gratitude for the impact and influence Richard had on my life, the St Luke community, and the world. He was a role model and example for us all (as you have been, as well). Matt remembers warmly the period when Richard was the Sunday school teacher for the kids class he was in. Richard is the best example I know of a life well-lived, of tremendous contribution to others and to society. His life will continue to be an inspiration to me and to many for years to come.
In sympathy, prayer, and gratitude,

Dear Mrs. Schwartz and family,
I am very sorry for your loss.
I was a resident in general surgery at UK from 1988-1993. I currently live in Oldham Co. and planned to go to the visitation Wednesday but our ER had other ideas. I really enjoyed my time with Dr. Schwartz. He went to extra lengths to educate us. The time he put in reviewing the major surgical texts and his teaching during surgical procedures were vital to my surgical training. Dr. Schwartz not only taught
me to be a surgeon, but also how important it is to treat your patients
and coworkers with compassion and respect. Dr. Schwartz will be missed.

Sincerely,
Wendell Bailey

Janet, Sarah and Andrew,

I am so saddened to hear about the death of Dr. Schwartz. It has been awhile since my days representing Pfizer Inc. at UK, however it was like yesterday that I remember the life lessons Dr. Schwartz taught me about my professional and personal life. He had such a profound impact on so many people not only within the medical community but around the globe. Some of my fondest memories working in the Lexington medical community were a direct result of Dr. Schwartz's leadership and advocacy. My thoughts and prayers are with you as he will surely be missed.

Deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Schwartz. He will be remembered by those he has taught for his passion, commitment and dedication to the art and science of our profession, and his ability to teach and inspire by example.

Janet & Family: So sorry to learn of Dr. Rich's passing. I worked in the division of Cardiology at UK and worked along with Dr. John Gurley with the volunteers at the Salvation Army Homeless Clinic one of which was Dr. Schwartz. He was always a very gracious Dr. and person to be around and work along side of. I just saw Dr. Schwartz my last visit to UK KY clinic, 09 awaiting my visit, back this summer. He gave me a big hug and told me he was still doing surgery, for I had moved in May to Monticello, KY. I had had a brain Aneurysm back in 1996 while I was an administrative assistant in Cardiology. He visited me at Cardinal Hill while I was in, when I came back to work at UK after my medical leave, he was surprised I wanted to come back to work. I came back in a wheelchair. I'm sure Cardiology didn't know what to do with me at that time, but I was determined to show them I could still work. Dr. Schwartz always encouraged me to hang in there. I always appreciated his spirit.
Please know our prayers go out to you and your family. I'm United Methodist also.

Shalom, Janet Schaeffer (Monticello, KY)

Janet and family,

I cannot find the word to express my deepest sympathies and regret for you. He meant so much to me. He was my mentor who took me under his wing and taught me how to be a "good" physician. He was a friend who I could turn to and who helped me along my journey. This knucklehead will never forget you and knows the world has lost something precious. Thank you Dr. Schwartz for all that have done in service to others and thank you for what you did for me. We will miss you. My deepest condolences to the Schwartz family I will continue to pray for you.

I knew Richard both from Tates Creek High School and tennis at UK. He was a wonderful person and friend. He urged me to not only play tennis for exercise but to cross-train. I took his advice and started both aerobic dance and walking in combination with playing tennis and it has made a difference in my health and movement. I watched as he taught Andrew to play tennis. I'll miss him and am sorry for your loss.

I am indebted to Rich’s influence in my career in academic surgery and will always treasure the times when we discussed so many life topics usually over the tennis court!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of Rich's family. The loss of such a good man is hard to accept.

Paula and I were fortunate to have met Rich and Janet through the friendship of his father Stan and my mother Dorothy Young. We always looked forward to seeing Rich and Janet on our all too infrequent trips home to Kentucky.

Rich was always interested in everything and everybody. His opinions and thoughts were well chosen and carefully considered. And he was usually right. Or would argue with you until you agreed with him!!

We will miss him terribly.

To the Schwartz family, you have my prayers and sympathy. Since finding out about his cancer, I have prayed for him daily and held you all in my thoughts. Dr. Schwartz had a way of picking up the smallest details about people- he would make you feel like you were important and that you mattered. I will miss his laugh and I will miss hearing him say "this is Dr. Schwartz " when he was on the phone...
We learned a lot from him and he made us laugh...

Rich was a tremendous father, husband, physician, Christian and friend. His life can be summed up in two words - "excellence" and "commitment". He instilled this in his wonderful children and demanded it of himself. He adored his wife and worshiped his children and grand children. He had great hope and inspired those who knew him. He will be greatly missed and remembered. I am thankful that I had the chance to know him and his family all these years.
