Richard G. Shanks CORN VALLEY, Va. Richard G. Shanks, 55, died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, from injuries received in a truck accident while working in Dickenson County. Born Oct. 28, 1953, in Richmond, Va., a son of the late Junior Ellis Shanks and the late Hazel Jarvis Shanks, he had lived in Russell County the past eight years. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Mr. Shanks was an employee of Gasco Drilling, Inc. Survivors include his wife, Nancy K. Shanks, Corn Valley; two daughters, Melinda Asbury and husband Joe, Meadowview, Va., and Dedra Smith and husband Eddie, Lebanon, Va.; special grandson, Ethan Smith, Lebanon; sisters, Mary Ida Rivera and husband Juan, Chester, Va., and Patricia Windham and husband Bob, Prince George, Va.; three brothers, Wallace Shanks and wife Leah, Petersburg, Va., Wayne Shanks and wife Loraine, Charles City, Va., and Charles Shanks and wife Betty, Blackstone, Va.; mother-in-law, Myrtle Marshall, Corn Valley; also several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Burk Hess and the Rev. James Holmes officiating. Burial will follow in Stuart Memorial Cemetery on Kent's Ridge. Military rites will be conducted by the Lebanon VFW Post No. 9864. Pallbearers will be Charles Shanks, Donnie Cox, Wally Shanks, Curtis Peck, Cody Peck, James Peck, Lee Peck and Claude Hollaway. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Shanks, Bob Windham, Walt Boardwine, Estil Peck, Bill Hensley, Randy Deel, William "Tiny" Absher and employees of Gasco Drilling, Inc. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at the funeral home. Combs Funeral Service, 291 Fincastle Road, Lebanon, VA 24266, (276) 889-4444, is serving the Shanks family.
