Richard Shuck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 17, 2023.
Nick Shuck, 78, of Klamath Falls, Klamath County, Oregon, passed away on December 6, 2023, in Zurich, Switzerland. Nick, born Richard Nicholas Shuck, was a mentor to many people and had time for everyone. He was an exceptionally kind and generous person who had a wicked sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. Nick will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his country, his distinguished military career, and his contributions to the business world. He leaves behind a legacy of service and professionalism that will be cherished by all who knew him.

Nick is survived by his wife Desray, his brother Carl, son Todd, stepdaughter Courtnee, stepson Glen, and four grandchildren. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Southern Oregon.

Nick's military association was with the U.S. Marine Corps, where he enjoyed a distinguished career serving his country with honor, ultimately retiring after 31 years as a Colonel. His commitment and dedication to the Corps were unwavering, and he carried out his duties with the utmost professionalism. Throughout his career, Nick served as an Aviation Air Command and Control Officer in the Fleet Marine Force, a United Nations Military Observer in the Middle-East, commanded a Marine Air Control Squadron in the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, and later the Wing's G6. His last tour with the Corps was coordinating the relocation of the Manpower Management Division at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, Arlington, Virginia, to MCB Quantico, Virginia.

Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, Nick transitioned into the civilian sector, working initially with Sierra Nevada Corp Research and later BAE Systems. He excelled in his career with BAE Systems and ultimately retired in 2012 as a Vice President of U.S. Marine Corps Customer Requirements. His contributions to the industry were highly regarded, and he left a lasting impact as a leader and mentor on those he worked with.

In his free time, Nick enjoyed playing golf, traveling the world, going on long walks, and dining out. He cherished the time he spent on these activities, which brought him joy and enabled him to spend valuable time in the company of his wife, friends, and old shipmates.

Funeral arrangements for Nick are currently pending, and plans are underway for his burial at Arlington National Cemetery. It is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving his country and upholding its values.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation in honor of Nick Shuck's commitment to education and supporting the future generations of Marines.

Nick you may be gone but you are never forgotten! Those we love stay imprinted in ours hearts forever as their memories last till eternity. This picture was taken when I had just landed in London you and your amazing wife Des invited me over for lunch. After a lovely meal we took a nice long walk along St John´s Park. You both made my transition to the UK so seamless. Thanks for the love, care and support. Malebogo Mpugwa

It was wonderful to see how happy Nick and Des were together - a great match of intellect and adventure. Thank you for sharing your lessons in leadership via Des - they had a wider ripple effect than you might have realized! You will be missed!

I met Nick nearly 40 years ago in Buffalo NY. I was the Marine Liaison at the company he worked at. He was one of the key people in my career that made my life better, pointing me in the right direction, professionally. I was then and am now grateful for his influence. Paul McGraw

My wife, Candy, and I met Nick and Desray in London only late in the trajectory of Nick´s life and wish the overlap of our lives could have been greater. A remarkable combination of humor and insightfulness - a twinkle and a wry smile usually followed by pearl of observation or wit. Thanks for your friendship, Marine. Jim and Candy Beery

Colonel Nick Shuck, USMC ...
Worked for nearly three years HQMC. Few of his cognitive prowess. A thoughtful, common sense, considerate, and damn effective teacher and leader. When selected, he gifted me a pair of his eagles; treasure. But friendship is what will endure.
Semper Fi, Marine. Respectfully, Andy Weddington

Nick was a terrific neighbor. We had all recently moved into our new neighborhood and almost immediately upon meeting Nick he felt like a long time friend. To see Nick in the neighborhood was to engage in an interesting and usually laugh filled conversation. Nick clearly understood that life is about the people you touch during your life and I believe that all who knew him are better for that time we were lucky enough to know him. Nick will certainly be missed!

Nick was a dear and faithful friend, a brother Marine and a strong, dedicated and faithful Catholic. He always had a good story to share, a recount of an adventure or an update on a mutual friend.
Nick n Desray hosted our family for Christmas dinner and a tour of London in 2018 - a wonderful time we will always cherish.
Goodbye and Semper Fi to a good man and a great friend.

Hi Nick. It is such a previlage to have met you. A man of great military accomplishments, yet extremely humble. Every moment with you was 'light', even on occasional times when we were handling difficult situations. You will always be in my hear, my dear friend. - Noko P.

Nick made me laugh every day of my life for the last 10 years. Whether he was teasing me about my accent, or we were watching a movie together or reminiscing about our trips and especially about the Camino where we met, we laughed often and we laughed loud. Thank you my beloved husband for some of the best years of my life. AW XXX
