Dear Karen and Family,
Our entire family was greatly saddened to learn that Rick had passed away. Our deepest and most sincere condolences to both you and each member of your family.
My first memories of Rick were in the late 40s when Jessie came into town from Vanderhoof and invited Rick's cousins Patrick and Johnny to come out and visit. The boys had a great time getting to know each other even though they were very young.
Since that time many a summer vacation was spent in Victoria with Gramma and Grampa through to the days in Vernon and Kalamalka Lake.
Uncle Jack and I were always very proud of Rick and Nancy. They had great parents.
We recall going to Polson Park and watching Rick at football practice. After the practice was over Rick would stay another half hour and run up and down the bleachers.
Rick was always so very polite. I can recall a time when we dropped in to his law office and he dropped everything to come out and give us a big hug. His smile was unforgettable - huge and heart warming.
He will be missed but never forgotten.

Dear Karen and Family,
My wife, Amrit, and I were greatly saddened to learn that Rick had passed away. Our deepest and most sincere condolences to both you and each member of your family.
We first met Rick in 1993. He represented me and my firm in the landmark case, The Law Society of British Columbia V. Jaswant Singh Mangat et. al. The case was decided by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2002.
During our interactions with Rick over more than a decade, we found that he was not only an outstanding lawyer, he was also a very compassionate gentleman who had a great sense of civility and professional integrity.
We will always miss him.

Sugden Family,
I had the great privelege of growing up with the Sugden Family through my High School days with Dave. I spent many days playing basketball with our families cheering us from the stands. Mr. Sugden always had a smile and was always full of energy. Dave and the Sugden Family I am truly sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
Russ Sinclair

Dear Karen and family,
I worked for Sugden Mcfee and Roos as a part time receptionist while a student at UBC. Rick was a wonderful person to work for who effortlessly set the tone of a fun and cooperative workplace. He is a role model for me in balancing a strong work ethic with a rich family life, community service and a joi de vivre. My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Rick will be greatly missed as both a valued colleague and a terrific human being. His professionalism and high ethical standards are an example that anyone should follow in the practice of law. He was the gold standard. All my best to the family.

Dear Karen:
I was greatly saddened to learn that Rick had passed away.
My deepest and most sincere condolences to both you and to each member of your family.
It was my great pleasure and honor to have known Rick as not only a football player but also as one of the finest examples of what a student athlete should be at Simon Fraser University.
He was a great leader both on and off the football field. He always placed the team first and his personal goals second. He personally gave everything humanly possible in every practice and every game when he played for his University.
While not the biggest player on our defense team, there was no one who played with greater desire and courage.
When his football career was over and he attained his dream of becoming a lawyer. He spent hundreds of hours devoting his time to counsel and help young university athletes when they had personal problems. Rick also used his wisdom and expertise in assisting with the setting up of the SFU Football Alumni. In addition he was always available to assist less fortunate individuals in the community who were in need of legal assistance.
Yes, Rick was an excellent student, an outstanding athlete and a tremendous credit to the law profession. However, even more importantly , Rick was a loving husband and father who was also a truly great humanitarian. He will be fondly remembered, by all who knew him, for his humor, generosity, dedication and his sincere concern for the well being of others.

My memory of Rick is that of a fan watching him start as the Quarterback for the Vernon Panthers high school football team. Rick ran out between a line of cheer leaders that formed from the Polson Park Oval stands. He then took our team to a solid victory with his accurate throwing. This foreshadowed his life. He returned to Vernon as a young counsel to defend the owner of the Allison Hotel when all that remianed of its three stories was a blackened basement hole on our main street. Rick wil be well remembered in Vernon.

I would like to send my sympathies to Karen and all of the family from an old friend of Rick's. Rick and I lost direct touch some years back. When I would hear his name, or read of his accomplishments, it always brought a smile and warm thought. He had that kind of effect on all with whom he came into contact.
From the days of tossing a football to each other (UBC Law) or first contact at SFU, he was a friend.
I am but one of so very many whose life was made richer by having known Rick Sugden.
Go deep Rick.

I am sorry to hear that Rick had been ill and passed away this week. Rick, Nancy and their parents were our neighbours in Salmon Arm when he was a young boy. I have fond memories of their family before they moved to Vernon. My memory of Rick-huge smile.

I has the goodfortune to refer a number of clients to Rick and in every case the client was very well served and extremely well satisfied. I admired his work and more than that I admired and respected his integrity. He demonstrated all the good things that while we expect to find are not always found in our profession. We habe lost a good one.

Even during Rick's formative years in Salmon Arm he was regarded as a multi-talented and engaging young man who had the world at his feet. We were very sorry to hear of his passing and offer our prayers and condolences to his family.
