RICHARD TRAYNER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 12 to Jun. 16, 2011.
TRAYNER Richard Elwood Trayner was born November 8, 1946, in Danville, Ky., son of the late Luther Trayner and Kaye Robertson. Known to most as Rick, he was a proud University of Kentucky Alumni with Masters Degrees from Salve Regina College and Central Michigan University. Rick retired as a Captain after 30 years in the United States Navy. Resident of Orange Park, FL, he was Vice President of the Aerospace Group at Wyle and a dedicated member and deacon at Island View Baptist Church. A firm believer in giving back to others and serving both his community and his country, he was an active member of the Salvation Army of Clay County and the Rotary Club of Orange Park (Sunrise). Rick was Chairman of the First Coast HonorAir and he assisted in raising funds to take WWII veterans to observe their memorials in Washington, D.C. Rick was a devoted and generous husband, father, and community volunteer. He loved the state of Kentucky and was a KY Colonel since 1982. He was the ultimate UK basketball fan who enjoyed NASCAR, FSU and Jaguar football, fishing, sailing and kayaking. He was an avid reader and enjoyed a variety of music, especially blue grass and country. Rick had a positive impact on the lives of countless people and his work hard, play hard attitude showed through everything he accomplished. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Mary Lee Trayner, and children, Richard E. Trayner Jr., and Ashley K. Trayner of Jacksonville, a sister, Norma Carole Lipfert (Rick) of Vero Beach, FL., step-brother, Harold Rocky Robertson (Sue) of Birmingham, AL., and two grandchildren, Reagan Trayner and Kinsley Trayner. The celebration of Rick's life and accomplishments will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18th at Island View Baptist Church in Orange Park, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HonorAir, P.O. Box 65866, Orange Park, FL. 32065. Island View Baptist Church (Defibrillator Fund), 900 Park Ave., Orange Park, FL. 32073 or Salvation Army Clay County, 2795 CR 220, Middleburg, FL. 32068. Rick, as I am sure you are already aware of, you were very much in the thoughts of many tonight! As First Coast HonorAir Flight #7 prepares to take to the air. I wanted to say again what an honor and a pleasure it was to have met you. Since your passing I have learned that I really missed out on not knowing you beyond the HonorAir flights. I can say though that you will not be forgotten!

To the Trayner family,

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your father and husband. I can assure you that his legacy will live on in the Navy for many years to come.

I met CDR Trayner onboard the USS Saratoga when he was assigned as the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department Officer. I was a junior enlisted person who worked in Maintenance Admin directly for him next door.

In the days before internet, laptops, and cell phones, we both looked forward to mail call to see what books our loved ones had sent out. He was quick to grab any religious or history book I received before even I had the chance to read them.

Even though I was a young high school drop out, he saw something of value in me and provided guidance and mentorship. He said that I can achieve anything in the Navy that I desired. Because of him I will be retiring at the end of the year as a Lieutenant Commander after 25 years. His legacy continues on in me and all the other sailors whose lives he touched and the subsequent lives we have touched.

?I don't know how long I've known you, I do know we were both very young men when we met. I had the honor of knowing you most of my 30 year Navy career. You were always one of the most ideal officers I've ever served with, a trusted and honorable man. May God comfort your family and friends, and I wish our traditional “Fair winds and following seas,” to all of them.

To the Trayner Family,
Capt Trayner and I went way back as shipmates aboard USS John F Kennedy
CV-67. We both deployed to the Arctic Circle together , he as JO in Attack Squadron 46- "The Clansmen" and I in Attack Squadron 34, the "Blue
Blasters". Our Line Shacks were in close proximity to each other. Where I had a friend in that squadron I was in its line shack often, and Rick would be there from time to time. We saw quite a few aircraft mishaps during that deployment, as well as a collision at sea with our plane guard USS Boderlon, North Atlantic
Hurricanes, and cold, I mean Boreas Rex, Ruler of the North Wind - Arctic
Circle cold. We played a lot of Chicken of the Sea with the Soviet Navy
too. It was a very memorable deployment. Many years later when he was in command at Lynn I had the distinct privilige to serve under him. We often traded sea stories about those "glory days", because that is what old salts do. He was a joy to talk to and had such a human disposition about him. As a "Blue Jacket" I can think of no higher praise than to tell you he was unquestionably "a sailors sailor."

I cannot convey to you my sorrow, but please know it is truly hear felt, for I have lost a shipmate, and that is never easy.

Yours Sincerely,
Bob Ascolillo, Jr.

Farewell Shipmate.
