Dear Mary, Catharine, David, Anna, and children, My husband Michael and I were parishioners at St. Mary's Cathedral and had the pleasure of meeting you children now and then when you visited. Mary, you and Richard became very dear to us early on--just the sight of you a sign of steady, patient, wisdom-seeking faith. With you we thank God for his life and trust in his eternal joy. We grieve with you and pray for your consolation. Rest in peace and rise in glory, dear Richard.

Richard was such a kind and gentle friend and neighbor. He loved his gardening, and the neighborhood landscape will never be the same without seeing Richard out front tending the soil. He will be sorely missed for certain. Mary, Catharine, and David - our hearts feel for you.

A great teacher of mine at Madison in those turbulent '60s. He was always as solid as a rock. Wonderful memories of his smile that lite up his face. God's peace to the entire family.

Uncle Richard was a born teacher. Though I was not formally a student of his, I learned so much from him over the years. History, government, political theory, theological debates, gardening, and the decorative arts are but a few of the subjects I will remember learning from him. I cherished his dry wit and astute observations about modern life. I will always remember the example he set with his strong faith, in fact I think of it almost daily. He will be truly missed by so many. Aunt Mary, Catharine, David, Anna and the family you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Unger was my social studies teacher at Madison in the 1960s; he was the best high school teacher I had. He took an interest in me that helped light a fire of curiosity that has lasted a lifetime, and which I have always appreciated. He even came to our house for dinner one night, which was rare, and scary. It was while a new Pope was being selected, so he took us through the process, including the dark and white smoke. I so wish I could have told him that. I see by the obituary that he was married; back in those days, he was single. I'm glad he was with someone because he had so much to offer. Rest in Peace, sir. And thank you so much.
