Richard Warner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2025.
Dr. Richard R.P. Warner, pioneering physician who identified some of the first cases of carcinoid syndrome produced by lung tumors and helped advance the field of neuroendocrine oncology, passed away at the age of 97 on June 15, 2025, in Denver, Colorado.

The son of Dr. Marie Pichel Warner and Dr. Benjamin Warner, Dr. Warner graduated during World War II at age 15 from Horace Mann School in New York City. He completed his undergraduate degree at Oberlin College in three years and obtained his MD from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Warner then completed specialty training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, followed by an extramural NIH research fellowship from 1951-1958. He served as a captain in the medical corps of the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1957.

While in the Air Force, Dr. Warner recognized and reported the first two cases of carcinoid syndrome produced by tumors in the lung, which was exceedingly rare. Today, these tumors are recognized as distinct cancer types for which drugs and tests have been specifically developed. Dr. Warner's research yielded hundreds of lectures and publications and helped define the field of neuroendocrine oncology and carcinoid syndrome.

After his military service, Dr. Warner returned to Mount Sinai, and became a faculty member of its medical school in 1963. In 1968, he established the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation; and, in 2006 he was a founding member of the North American Neuroendocrine Society. In 2007, he was appointed Professor of Medicine (gastroenterology) at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He established the Center for Carcinoid and Related Neuroendocrine Tumors and also established and directed The Serotonin Research Laboratory at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Warner led an active life, taking pleasure in flying as a licensed pilot, playing saxophone and clarinet, skiing, swimming, and hiking. He treasured time with family, friends and especially his children and grandchildren, at the family's lake retreat in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Dr. Warner was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Dr. Gloria Marmar Warner, and by his second wife, Monica Elizabeth Warner. He is survived by his children Dr. Jon J.P. Warner (Geraldine), Keith R.P. Warner, Douglas C.P. Warner (Stacey) and Lynn W. Unipan (John); nine grandchildren (Brooke, Lauren, Christina, Benjamin, Taylor, Gabrielle, Joshua, Grace and Sarah) and great-grandchild (Lily); and the children of his deceased second wife, Charles (Elizabeth) and Nancy (Vincent) and their children.

The family requests any memorial donations be made to the Neuroendocrine Cancer Foundation (ncf.net).

Richard was a true pioneer that brought neuroendocrine tumors out of dark obscurity and into the light for all to see. Disease awareness would not be what it is today without his decades of tireless efforts. Seeing and talking with him at conferences was always a joy and I loved the times he visited my clinics at Oregon Health & Science University and I enjoyed visiting him in New York. He encouraged and inspired people to be specialists in the field. I will cherish the memories and always be thankful for having known him.

What a loss to the world! Dick was a wonderful person and a very dedicated physician. He taught me everything I ever knew about carcinoid and NET! His memory will be permanent among his friends, colleagues and patients who were lucky to learn from him.

May his memory be a blessing to all of us who knew him, I remember Dr. Richard as a person of wide interests and endless energy, who led a family of medical luminaries from the generation before into the future. I was the neighbor and a close friend of Richard´s eldest, J.P. The Warner family was inspiring, worldly and sophisticated. I remember the charming Dr. Gloria publishing on psychoanalysis and Shakespeare. And Dr. Richard lent his enlarger so J.P. and I could print photographs in an improvised darkroom in my home´s basement. Such an amazing family, we are all in your debt for all the good you do. So Thank You!

My husband saw Dr Warner when he was diagnosed with Carcinoid cancer of the small intestine in 2011. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. Not much was known about Carcinoid cancers and we were lucky that there was a physician in St Thomas, Virgin Islands, who had worked with Dr Warner. His cancer might never have been diagnosed. Thanks to a really good VI surgeon his cancer was entirely removed. There has not been any evidence of it since. He was put on Sandostatin for many years after.

When a mass was discovered during my first colonoscopy thirteen years ago, I was stunned, confused, and terrified. All of my doctors admitted that they knew very little about neuroendocrine tumors. After doing my own research I found Dr. Warner. I will never forget how calm and patient he was with me. Every time I would arrive for my annual check up, his assistant would say: "He needs some time. He is reviewing your records." When he was ready, he was truly ready. He knew every detail of my history. I still remember my last visit with him--I think he was 90 years old at the time--he was sharp as ever and kind, always so kind and reassuring. I had full confidence in any advice he provided. He was completely devoted to his patients and that is so rare these days. I will alway be grateful for his care and support.

Sending my most sincere condolences to Dr. Warner's family and friends. I was diagnosed with NET's cancer and carcinoid syndrome 15 years ago. He was not my doctor but he helped all of us as he shared his knowledge with the entire NET community. His devotion to helping us live and thrive with this disease will live on through all of us. God Bless you all and God Bless Dr. Warner.

Our dear friend and mentor lost his valiant battle against a slowly progressive disease. Although Dick lived a long life, his active pursuit of intellectual challenges involving neuroendocrine tumors long beyond the usual time of retirement made it seem as though his work was not finished. In reality, his wonderful insightful endeavors were extraordinarily productive and many patients are thriving today as a direct result of Dick's thoughtful decisions. Our friendship transcended that of mentor/mentee. We shared challenging ski slopes, warm lake waterskiing, biking on the roads of New Hampshire and many miles of walking in the halls of Mt Sinai Hospital on our mutual patient rounds.
We'll miss his precise counseling regarding patients with neuroendocrine tumors. However, the memories of so many precious times with Dick prompt smiles and repeated reminders of his giant presence. May his memory be a blessing.

Our hearts are heavy as we learned of the passing of Dr. Warner. I will share why he meant so very much to us. I had been quietly reading about him and his vast knowledge and expertise, after my wife Jackie was first diagnosed in 2009. In 2013, when Jackie ended up hospitalized and was told she was inoperable and terminal, we found his work email and sent him a desperate message on a holiday weekend. That evening, he read that message at his camp in New Hampshire, got in his car, drove to where he had cell service, and called me at 9:30pm on a Saturday. He gave us hope, he gave us options, he gave Jackie a second chance. We saw him regularly for only three short years of support and treatments before he retired in August of 2016. And when Jackie was again critical in December 2016, we desperately called, a now retired, Dr. Warner and he placed a call to the Chief of Surgery at Mt. Sinai on our behalf. By the grace of God, Jackie was again spared. He epitomizes everything it means to be a doctor, and of someone who truly cares and he made it his mission in life to care for others. I hope no one goes through something similar. But if you do, I hope you have a Dr. Warner. What a wonderful man. What a wonderful life. What a wonderful legacy. We are blessed and honored to have known him.

Dr. Warner was the bright spot in my life when they found a carcinoid tumor in my small intestine in 1990. Throughout the many years he always took and gave such a positive view that reassured me. We also shared many stories about our favorite skiing destination-Alta. He was just a wonderful light in my life-and I´ve being missing him since her retired.

Dr. Warner, as my children affectionately called him, wasn't just a family friend, he was part of our story. From the moment I met him as his flight instructor, a lifelong friendship was born. The bond only grew through the years, marked by unforgettable adventures, cross country ski trips, cherished summers at his beautiful New Hampshire lake home and countless memories made together. Dr. Warner also held a deeply important place in our family's heart for the care he gave my father in law. We believe without question, that my father in law had been misdiagnosed elsewhere, and it was Dr. Warner's expertise and correct diagnosis that gave him not only a second chance, but 10 more years of quality life.

We will forever remember his brilliance, kindness, love of life and adventurous spirit. His legacy lives on in all the lives he touched, including ours.

With much heartfelt sympathy and Love

When I was diagnosed at age 41 after surgery at Mt Sinai in 2001 with this little know rare disease I had the good fortune to be able to have Dr Warner see me and explain to me exactly what I had and what his plan for me was before I even left the hospital. He was my beacon of light and hope and I trusted him completely. Dr Warner not only had the clinical and medical expertise of neuroendocrine/ carcinoid disease but had amazing instincts and knew how to treat each of us individually. He was always available, ready to teach, answered phone calls himself and just a great man. I considered him and Monica friends and worked with them on many events.
He was world respected and considered the guru of NET cancer. I am now 65 still here and although I still have this disease and deal with it I am living and I owe that to Dr Warner directly not only as my physician but because he also trained so many other Carcinoid specialists.
Thank you Dr. Warner you will he greatly missed but always remembered and cherished.
