hi richard

it's may 3rd. it has been one year since you had to leave us, but you haven't left our hearts. you would be so proud of the coffee shop and the lives that are being touched. as of today we have 724 brand new veterans who have walked in these doors. i always tell the new veterans the history of the coffee shop and how it all started. i miss you. the guys remind me that you may have already opened up a coffee shop up in heaven. that i would believe. by the way there was a celebration for veitnam veterans in rock hill sc. i went on a huey ride with some of the veterans. it was the most beautiful experience i ever had. i wanted to share in something you always shared with me the only thing missing was the classical music through headphones while riding as you shared you listened to. and of course you were missing, but the guys said richard was flying with us. your spirit is so strong here.

To Richard's family (whether kin or like us adopted) We are stronger and more aware of the struggles of many vets d/t Richard. I wish I had gotten to know you children in happier times and not just at his funeral. I am one more person telling you that your gift of your father/grandfather to us is incredible. That may sound strange but you allowed him to be here with a new family of Veterans and friends. I know you missed him terribly. His grandchildren surely missed their grandfather and he - them.Such a sacrifice! He would have loved to be there too. But he was healing himself here.With the help of other vets who needed him, he continually got healed. You will understand that later.But for now, just know he loved you and he was so loved by us.I keep him in my heart always.In his picture,he smiles at us at the new coffee shop,wherever we sit to play music now. Keep your love for your father,grandfather,brother,etc strong.His was strong and is still,I know. God bless you all. M

CWO Richard Warren, USA was a true American hero. He loved his country, but most of all he loved the warrior who fought to defend it. The Coffee Shop in Mooresville NC is a labor of love which has no equal. I happened upon the Coffee Shop one day, and while not a frequent visitor, was really touched by the commitment to honoring veterans.

Visitors are likely to be greeted by survivors of:
. WWII Bataan Death March;
. WWII Army nurse in Philippines;
. WWII ship sunk by German sub;
. WWII Army Air Corps over Burma/China;
. numerous Korean War veterans;
. Special Ops Airborne Ranger who parachuted behind enemy lines during Bay of Pigs invasion, and never saw his 19 comrades again;
. Vietnam Marine who lost 2 legs and an arm serving under command of now Sen Jim Webb (D-VA);
. Vietnam Navy pilot shot down over Laos who parachuted into the middle of 10,000 NVA troops, and was rescued after an epic 3-day effort;
. Vietnam Air Force Captain who was 6-year POW and cellmate of John McCain at Hanoi Hilton;
. General who captured Manuel Noriega in Panama;
. too many other heroes to mention.

In addition to these survivors, a visitor also will experience memorials to local Patriots who gave their lives in service of their country, including a Marine who died in the Battle for Fallujah, Iraq.

Richard's Coffee Shop truly is a living museum of American History, a testimony to a humble Patriot whom we all respected, and to the veterans he loved so much.

Welcome to your Eternal Home, Richard. You've made it. Keep a fresh pot of coffee on for your friends.

Hi Richard;
I heard you during a Live Spot on WBT Radio and thought,'I've got to meet this guy, he's a Brother. When I finally got a Thursday off of work so I could come to the Coffee Shop, you had left us a week or so before.
I wish I could have shook your hand but instead I've been hugged by Cheryl Ann and she and others have helped me come to know you through stories and discriptions of who you were and what you did for all of us.
You'll be loved and held in a place of honor in all of our hearts forever.
Love ya bro.

As the webmaster for Richard's Coffee Shop (WelcomeVets.com), all I can say is it is both a privilege and an honor to have worked with and known Richard.

As he did for thousands of others, for 14 years, he made me feel a part of something bigger - the vets!

We will always honor and respect him for what he did, how he lived and what he stood for. God Bless You Brother.

Today would have been your 68th birthday. I've thought about when we were kids playing kick the can, having to be your partner when you took dance lessons. When you got your first car, going to the beach with the kids in Gary, In. Staying with you and Betsy after you had Brian. The big family Christmas eve get togethers. It seems like all of that was just yesterday. You did good for kid that grew up on a dead end street. Love you Brother.

Richard:
I never knew you while living, but certainly feel as though I now know and respect you. I served in the US Navy from 11/1970 through 11/1974. I remember feeling alot of pride for our country and receiving much love and respect from my family members when I entered the service. When returning home, about the only thing I could remember, was those damn protesters in every airport in the country. Because of all of the comments, and stories I had heard throughout the services devoted to you, I gained a new respect and love for this country of ours. I know that you are now running a much larger and glorious coffee shop where you are at now. Thank you so very much for your continued support of the American Veteran,
Respectfully,

I was taken to Richard's coffee shop by a close friend who lived up that way in 2001.
I am a Vietnam vet returning in 1969 and I still remember Richard was the first person to shake my hand and say welcome home brother. After all thse years he was the very first to welcome me back home. I shall always remember that act of kindness. Thank you Richard for welcoming all us Vietnam vets back home and making us feel like a job well done.

Richard welcomed those of us who are children of veterans and made us feel proud of the service of our fathers.

He made sure and called me when another "military brat" came in his shop one day, whose father very likely served with mine in the Pacific during WWII, just so that we could meet over the phone.

Richard was a true patriot and I'm proud to say that he was my friend.

Things just won't be the same on our next trip to Moorseville without Richard. It was only by pure luck that my boyfriend and I happened upon Pat's Coffee Shop a few years ago on our annual stay at our family's in Mooresville. Every other shop was closed and we were hungry. Didn't think much of the place from the outside and wanted something to eat. Little did we know what was beyond the doors. As young Canadian history buffs with family members as veterans past and present, it was truly a gift to be able to meet Richard and go back yearly for a visit. We often took a Canadian poppy or special commemorative veterans coins with us to give to Richard. We never tired of exploring the shop and listening to his stories. It was also a privilege to meet many of his patrons. We will miss our annual hello and hug.

May you rest in peace brother. It was my great honor to serve with you at Pat's Coffee Shop. I know first hand, as many do, how much you and your vision for the Veterans will be missed.

On behalf of the South Iredell High School Marine Corps JROTC, I would like to express our sympathy to Richard’s family. We have been involved in several Veteran memorials over the years and Richard never failed to add a unique and memorable touch to each one. I am still amazed at the level of love and dedication he had for Vet’s. I am confident Richard is in a comfortable place now where he is being treated as warmly as he has treated others. Richard -

You will never know what an impact you made on so many lives. When my dad started living with me he missed his VFW meetings but after he visited the coffee shop that first Saturday he never looked back. You made him feel welcome and a part of something larger. I thank you for the assistance and respect you gave other veterans and for your constant effort to help those who needed it. You will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to Mr. Warren's family. We will miss him coming into BJ's Membership Club every Sunday morning to get appleturnovers. I was fortunate to be able to get an item in the club that he wanted and got to talk to him on the phone and get to know him a little better. He told me about the coffee shop and invited me to come one Saturday morning. Mr. Warren truly touched many lives. God Bless You!

I would come to he coffee shop on Saturday mornings to listen to Bluegrass and be amoung some of our famous verterans. Richard would treat everybody like family. He surprised me one morning in setting it up for me to announce my engagement to the crowd! I told Richard to give me a few minutes, I had to tell my son first! Chris was not pleased that Richard knew before he did!

To the Family of Mr. Richard:

On Monday night while watching the 10:00 news, I was totally shocked to hear of Mr. Richard's sudden passing. I had the privilege of meeting him through a mutual friend. The first day I met him at Pat's Coffee Shop, he became an instant friend. His love for his country
and compassion for veterans is to be commended. Mr. Richard was loved by many and he will certainly be missed.

I pray that you will all find comfort, peace and strength in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, May God bless each of you as you face these difficult days ahead.

Richard called me last week and introduced me, over the phone, to a Korean War veteran who had recently moved to China Grove. The most important thing in the world to him at that moment was for two Korean vets to get acquainted and to be able to talk about their experiences.
Richard's mission was to place each and every veteran in contact with the 'brother' who served beside him or simply served in the same area or war.
His greeting to those entering Pat's Coffee Shop was always "Welcome Home, Brother" and all veterans were Richard's brother. We will miss our brother.

Main Street Mooresville will never be the same. Richard was an exceptional person. Anytime I had out of town guests I would take them to Mooresville and Pat's Coffee Shop was the highlight because Richard would always take time to talk and share stories. My brother from New York State, who's a Vietnam Vet had planned to come to NC for Veteran's Day just to go to Pat's Coffee Shop. That's the kind of impact he had on people. What he did for the community of Mooresville and Vets is truly amazing. He's a true American hero. God now has a very special angel. We'll miss you Richard!

We were saddened to hear of Mr. Warren's sudden death. We pray that God will comfort and strengthen his loved ones even as he offered comfort and friendship to many military veterans who visited his coffee shop. We did! Thank you Richard and may God welcome you home in Christ Jesus.
