Richard G. West, age 73, died on Nov. 18, 2010 at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Susanne M. (Bernotas) West of Plymouth. Born in Plymouth on June 7, 1937, he was son of the late Martin and Mary (Morton-Hall) West. He was educated in Plymouth and was a graduate of Plymouth High School, class of 1955. He entered the U.S. Navy following his high school graduation. He served on the USS Fox, the USS Compton, and the USS Sellers, on which he was a plank owner. For many years Richard was employed by Commonwealth Electric Company, where he retired from working as a draftsman. Mr. West enjoyed working with his hands doing wood carving and toll painting. He enjoyed fishing and pampering his rescue dog Maggie. He had a sweet tooth and loved home baked goodies. Richard is survived by his devoted wife Susanne and was the loving father of Richard Jr. and his wife Monica, Andrew and his companion Joann Sharnick, all of Plymouth, Susanne Varnum and her husband F. Scott of Cary, NC , Elizabeth Sears and her husband Walter of Westford and Rebecca Wiggins and her husband Bradford of Plymouth. He was the loving grandfather of Meaghan, Timothy and Zachary West, Stephen and Lucas Varnum, Gordon and Maxwell Sears and Trevor and Kyle Sharnick.He was the great-grandfather of Tyler and Elizabeth West. He was the brother of the late Martin West Jr. , Mildred Grennell and Beatrice Schlecht. Besides his dog Maggie, he leaves his grand-doger Scarlett Wiggins. Visitation took place on Tuesday, Nov. 23 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 6:30 at the Cartmell Funeral Home, 150 Court St., Plymouth. I am very saddened to learn of Richard's
passing. I served with him and was a plankowner on the USS Sellers so many years ago. We had not seen each other since those days in the Navy, but did keep in touch in recent years using e-mail.
