Richard Wolfe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 24, 2022.
Richard Martin Wolfe, born in Columbus, Ohio on August 11, 1933, died in Ibiza, Spain, on July 5, 2022. "Dick" Wolfe was a prominent communications engineer, businessman, supporter of the arts, and advocate for mental health. A 1951 graduate of Bexley High School, he studied Electrical Engineering at The Ohio State University. He joined the United States Army Signal Corps and served overseas. Dick had a meritorious career in telecommunications, working for WBNS-TV and Radio. He was an avid volunteer in the community with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, on fundraising boards, and on multiple health boards including Franklin County Mental Health Association, Mid-Ohio Health Planning Federation, and Maryhaven. He was an early supporter of NORML and was a driving force behind the 1976 Ohio Drug Abuse and Controlled Substances Act, which lightened the penalties for possession of marijuana for personal use. In the late 70s, Richard moved to California where he worked as Vice President of Video Technology for 20th Century Fox. His consulting firm Hi-Vision America partnered with NHK in Japan to bring HDTV to the USA. He was an active member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, Society of Broadcast Engineers, and the Audio Engineering Society. More recently, he engaged in the vibrant arts communities of San Francisco, CA, and Ibiza, Spain. Preceded in death by his parents, Richard Stanton Wolfe, Elizabeth Martin (Wolfe) McCalmont, and his brother Bruce Fowler Wolfe. He is survived by his wife, Claudia, his daughters Lucy Wolfe and Elizabeth Wolfe Hamrick (John), and four grandchildren, Maximilian Schmitz, Sarah Schmitz, Richard Hamrick, and Alexander Hamrick. The family plans a memorial to celebrate his life to be announced at a later date.

He was an amazing man. I met him in San Francisco in 2007 when he was 73. He did not look at day over 60. He was always kind, generous, loving, and giving. He was a good friend.

Dearest Elizabeth and Lucy,
I am sorry that you have lost your mother and father in such a short time period. That must be difficult. I am happy to have stayed in touch with Elizabeth and hope to have been an outlet to discuss all that we love about our parents and dealing with current needs.

Richard was always so kind to me at 60 Park Drive and your home and WBNS-TV with Mary Anne Hardman so many times and my mother (Lee Burges). When I think of him, I think of wanting peace in the world, calmness, Elton John, Bette Midler, valuing stretching the mind in all ways, travel, Ibiza, his amazing acoustic system that we enjoyed, all the aquariams lining the hallways at 60 Park Drive, Ferrari's, exotic art and the WOW factor. Gee whiz, I wonder if some of that rubbed off on you two wonderful women? I am sure that Richard is making friends in Heaven and I hope he will save a seat near him for me. Love you both to the moon,

Raleigh (preschool friend/schoolmate of Elizabeth, worked at WBNS-TV for 10years)

Oh Richard......rarely have I met such a truly wonder person. It was an honor to know him. He was a example of walking the talk. He was not afraid to be unique, passionate and caring in his approach to any and every project or movement he was part of. He lived life to the fullest, and was generous to those he cared about. My heart goes out to his family. This was a beautiful tribute. I will miss him. He will live on in my heart as I´m sure all of you. As he would say, with "love and light".
