Rickey Peters Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 9, 2023.
Rickey Wayne Peters, known as the gentle giant, was a devoted and loving husband and father of two who went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 2023.

Kind with a radiant smile, always whistling, humming, and singing, there was nothing he could not do. He loved his wife and kids, working with his hands, the outdoors, golf, baseball, volleyball, softball, football, skiing, scuba diving, water skiing, hunting, and fishing.

Rick was born on May 26, 1960, to Donald Elmer Peters and Willa Belle Peters in Stratton, Colorado. He was one of two children. Rick grew up in Stratton where he loved working on the family farm, getting up at the crack of dawn and working until the sun went down. He graduated from Stratton High School in 1978 where he excelled playing football, baseball, and basketball. He even played against the Harlem Globe Trotters when they visited Colorado. After high school, he attended Central State College in Oklahoma where he played football as a rover (free safety).

In 1985, Rick moved to Dallas, where he worked as a general contractor building and remodeling homes and offices. Rick was an extremely gifted builder remodeling homes all over the DFW area, especially in Highland Park, and some of his work was published in magazines. His talent to build unique layouts and designs from memory was a true gift, whether it was commercial buildings or homes. His best work was by memory where natural talent and a good eye amazed his clients. During his 35-year career as a general contractor building and remodeling homes and offices, Rick was known for his hard work, precision, attention to detail and quality of work. In 1987 Rick met the Ashmore family working as the general contractor finishing out the offices for the Ashmore Law Firm.

Rick was super athletic standing 6'4" and when away from work, he loved golfing and playing softball where he played in several city leagues, both men and coed teams. His favorite team was playing for the Misfits of Dallas. He spent the summers water skiing and the winters snow skiing, all with family and friends.

Rick met the love of his life, Lori Ashmore, and they started dating in 1991. Rick proposed to Lori on Christmas Eve in 1994 in front of family, which was the most fitting proposal for those who know the Ashmore family. Rick and Lori married on September 30, 1995, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Before welcoming their kids, Rick and Lori enjoyed traveling to the Virgin Islands with family, spending their time sailing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. They also traveled often to Las Vegas with family and friends, where Rick would spend much of his time golfing. After 12 years of marriage, Rick and Lori welcomed their daughter, Alexa, in 2007 and son, Luke, in 2008.

Rick loved his kids more than anything. If given the choice, he would have been with his kids 24/7. When given the chance, in 2020 Rick retired and began staying home full time with the kids, which is what he loved most. Rick loved road trips with his wife and kids. He loved spending time together, going to the ranch and fishing, along with their yearly trips back to his hometown of Stratton, Colorado to see his family, and their yearly trips to go snow skiing, snow shoeing and hiking. Rick was incredibly proud of his kids, especially watching them play the sports they loved, with Alexa playing volleyball and sand volleyball and Luke playing football and baseball.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents, Donald Elmer Peters, and Willa Belle Peters. Rick is survived by his wife, Lori Ashmore Peters, daughter Alexa Marie Peters, son Luke Donald Peters, sister Theresa Headley of Burlington, Colorado, nephew Jesse Martens and his wife Selena Martens of Greely, Colorado and nephew Cody Martens of Burlington, Colorado. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Janie Ashmore, father-in-law, Joseph E. Ashmore, Jr., brother-in-law, Joseph E. Ashmore, III and his wife, Karen Ashmore, brother-in-law Gary Ashmore and sister-in-law Mary Ashmore, Ryan Mura, Kristen Ferguson, and her husband Seth Ferguson and their daughter Lucy Ferguson, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Celebration of Life will be held at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on October 17, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with lunch immediately following.

In lieu of flowers: Donations in his honor may be made to Scottish Rite for Children.

Growing up with Rick and Thresa, they were like our brother and sister. Coming from small towns, but large families there was always something happening. Being around Rick and Thresa was always a lot of fun when we were growing up. We all heckled and teased each other all the time as cousins do.
Only met the Ashmore family once but knew Rick enjoyed being with the family in Dallas. Rick and Lori made for a great couple. The kids Alexa and Luke were like the icing on the cake.
We will miss Rick very much, and our hearts will go out to Lori, Alexa, and Luke and the rest of the Ashmore family.
After the Black Forest fire, we are planting new trees and one of them will be named Rick's Tree. Ed and Linda Busby and Family

Lori, Alexa, Luke and the Ashmore family,
Rick's passing was certainly a great loss. Though in the most precarious and dangerous of situations, Rick continued to have strength and courage. He took every opportunity to be cheerful and encouraging to each of you, well aware of the graveness of his situation. This speaks of his tremendous character and the love he had for you. May he continue to inspire you always.

Spending time on there family farm South of Stratton. Walking the dirt roads, swimming in the cow tank, and going out to where Uncle Don was harvesting wheat. Rick such a nice guy and awesome cousin. Loved his smile and laugh. Last time I saw him was at his Mom's funeral. I had to tell it wasn't fair he had no gray hair LOL. He just laughed and smiled.
