Riley James Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 24 to Apr. 26, 2023.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Riley C. James, our cherished son and brother. Riley was born on December 29, 1998 in Nevada County. He was the first-born to Kial and Katie James. He is survived by his siblings, Carter, Lauren, Holden, and Sawyer, and will forever remain their big brother. Riley came from a large extended family, with numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandparents who loved him dearly. Riley also had a wide circle of friends and will be deeply missed by many.

Riley was a dedicated firefighter and EMT, with an unparalleled passion for serving his community. He peacefully went to sleep on March 4th, 2023, prepared to work an early morning shift, when God called him to his forever home. Death has lost its sting and we look forward to the day we will see our Riley again.

Riley's love for Nevada County was unwavering, particularly for the Yuba River. No matter where his education or career led Riley, the Yuba was his consistent sanctuary each time he returned back home. Riley was full of energy and enthusiasm, with a desire to always be learning more. He graduated from NCSA, Ghidotti, Sierra College, and UC Davis. He knew from a young age that he wanted to either be a firefighter or a doctor. A highlight for Riley was being chosen to attend Stanford for a medicine clinical internship. His first word spoken as a baby was "firetruck," so it was fitting that he eventually chose the path he did.

Riley enjoyed spending time with his family, playing sports, hiking, and hanging out with friends. His interests were varied and abundant. Riley's adventurous spirit often led him outdoors. He was introduced to gold panning at a young age and caught the "gold fever," but really it was always about more than just the gold. Riley's memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, love of new foods, and signature 'moves' that always brightened the room. We mourn his passing and take comfort in knowing that he is now with his Grandma Sally (James) and Papa Paul (Plaggmier).

Psalm 34:18 reminds us that "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Our beloved son and brother, you will never be forgotten. Your light will continue to shine bright in us for the rest of our lives. Rest in peace, Riley. To learn more about Riley's life and legacy, please visit rileycjames.com

I am sorry for your loss. His passion to serve is amazing and I feel that while your loss is overwhelming and difficult, it is also a loss for the community as a whole. We have all lost a bright shining star. I will keep him and his family in my prayers.

After giving Riley his first musical instrument, a violin at about five or six, he taught himself to play many, guitar, keyboards, and banjo to name a few. He could accomplish anything he set his mind to do. My heart is heavy with this terrible loss but his incredible light shines on and will be with me forever
