Rita Markowitz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 20 to Apr. 23, 2011.

Rita Markowitz (nee Berger) passed away Sunday, April 3, 2011 in Westlake Village after recently celebrating her 78th birthday with family and loved ones.

Mrs. Markowitz is survived by her husband, Arnold. They were married for 59 years. Rita's sons, Bruce, Alan, Rick and Todd with their wives, nine grandchildren and their spouses live in California. Mrs. Markowitz's sister, Marilyn Buckner, resides in New Jersey with adult children and a great-nephew. Rita's brother, the late Bernard Berger, also lived in New Jersey, survived by his wife Naomi and their sons and families.

Rita was born and raised in Newark, N.J., to a family rich in culture and music. She attended Weequahic High School, was a drum majorette, played violin, loved to sing, dance, and write poetry. After marrying her high school sweetheart, she and Arnold moved to the suburbs to raise their boys in Paramus, N.J. The family relocated to California in the late 1970s.

Rita was fondly known as the "Shoe Lady," remembered by many in the Thousand Oaks area for her warm, cheerful smile and making everyone feel at home at The Shoe Revue, her women's Shoe and Clothing Store in the Janss Mall that she owned with son, Rick. Mr. and Mrs. Markowitz had moved to Las Vegas, Nev., eight years ago, but recently moved back to California with their beloved dog, Bu-Bu, to be closer to the "kids." She left behind dear friends in Vegas who will now be lifelong friends of the family.

Rita was laid to rest in Dignity/ Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Memorial in Westlake Village, with a well-attended heartfelt service. She will be desperately missed for her caring love and attention as wife, Mom, Nana, sister, aunt and friend.

Memorial donations in Rita's name may be made to Safe Nest, 6135 W. Sahara #4, Las Vegas, NV 89146 or at SafeNest.org.

After 20+ years, I ran into Rick's lovely wife, MaryAnn, in WLV, and was sad to hear of Rita's passing. I always thought Rita had class, brains, style, and beauty. Always a warm "hello", always a kind word. What sad news.

For us, Rita represented strength through a deep care for her family, her home. She loved the beauty she experienced in art, in particular music. She was always proud of her families accomplishments and supported those effort. She was compassionate and understanding of human suffering. We will always remember her selflessness and courage in the last few years of her life. WIth Love

The Mother of our much loved son-in-law, Alan was a beautiful, strong woman who gave so much to her four sons and their wives. The legacy she has left behind will always make the memories sweet and meaningful. Her love for them and her grandchildren plus her tremendous courage throughout her long battle will be forever remembered.

You all gave her the love, serenity and respect in her final months that was a tribute to a good life.

Most sincerely,

Marilyn and Marty Rubin

My condolences to the family. I knew her through knowing my friend, Alan Markowitz, as he would relay stories from his childhood. What a beauty she was!

Nana was not only loved by all those who knew her; she was adored. She really was one of a kind and will be missed dearly. I will think and speak of Nana often, with the greatest sense of pride that comes from being her grandson and passing on her loving memory. I love and miss you Nana.
